Dash Crofts of Seals and Crofts dies at 85

Get Closer, Diamond Girl and Summer Breeze were huge hits for Seals and Crofts. I still have the two songs on my phone.

I never listened to their albums.

Jim Seals died June 6, 2022.
RIP

Rare live performance with Carolyn Willis.
First time I’ve seen it.

“Summer Breeze” and “Diamond Girl” are great songs that I will always listen to even when SiriusXM repeats them a million times a week.

Summer breeze is a bucolic acoustic song (with toy piano on the chorus!), but Diamond Girl is from their over-produced phase.

I much prefer their earlier stuff, guitar and mandolin:

A long ways from their days of playing sax and drums in the Champs (“Tequila!”)…

I have an early album of theirs called “Down Home,” released on an obscure label (T.K.) before they went to Warner Bros. and became famous. It contains a song called “Hollow Reed” which I’ve always loved. On the “Summer Breeze” album, I’ve always flipped for “East of Ginger Trees.”

Their career had an odd trajectory. Unknown to very famous and rather quickly to has-beens, but they had quite a string of radio-friendly hits in a relatively short time.

I like elaborate productions. Most acoustic stuff is aurally boring. Not all of it, of course, but records are studio productions and should take full advantage of that.

And neither Crofts nor Seals played on “Tequila”, though they joined the group later. But then, who didn’t?

I can’t find it on Google.

But, I remember Seals and Crofts toured with a disabled musician. I think he had Cerebral palsy? Very talented.

I saw them on a tv performance.

Louie Shelton played the lead on Diamond Girl.

He demonstrates how in this YouTube short.
