Date cookies - a German recipe?

My husband took me up to his mother’s hometown of Vassar, Michigan last weekend, and we got a couple of packages of cookies - namely, yucky old dry cookies with date filling that aren’t yucky, old, or dry (that was what his mother and grandmother used to tell him when he was little to keep him away from them because they wanted them all for themselves  ). We picked up a package for his mom and a package for us at the Shop-Rite in Vassar at his mom’s request. I LOVE these cookies - we both do - but we’re nearly out of them. Unfortunately, Vassar’s a little far from our Ohio town for a quick shopping trip, so I tried to find a recipe for them - I’m planning to give them away with my Christmas cookies, too, if I can find the recipe I’m having absolutely no luck finding the recipe, so I was hoping someone here might know what they are.

They’re basically a large sugar cookie - probably a double-sized, very soft sugar cookie, wrapped around a creamy date filling. It’s not an actual date, it’s just a creamier date filling. That’s all there is to it - they sound awful, but they are amazingly good.

Anyone have any idea how I might make these? Thanks!

Are they drop date cookies?

I think those are similar, and the filling actually looks right - so I could probably duplicate them with this recipe. The only thing that seems off is that the sugar cookie is wrapped around the filling, it’s not like a sandwich thing. I could probably figure out a way to do that.

Thanks!
