It’s for a significant under bite. Our blender will get more use the next few weeks than it has in the many years we’ve had it. Please send good thoughts her way if you’re so inclined.
Oh. Poor thing. I’ve had 3 jaw surgeries due to injury.
Buy applesauce, ice cream, yogurts, baby foods and lots of straws.
Heal well P-dau. I’ll be thinking of you.
I wish her a successful surgery and quick recovery! And I wish you a calm day. It’s so hard to watch your child go through a surgical procedure.
Good thoughts on the way.
After this is all over, may she eventually be better able to bite what needs biting.
Been there, done that with the Elder Ottlet twenty years ago. They shortened her lower jaw and used titanium plates to extend her upper jaw; I expect technology has advanced since then. In any case, good thoughts duly sent.
(An unanticipated side benefit was that for the first time in her life she could breathe comfortably through her nose.)
Sending good thoughts her way! Please let us know how she fares.
Sending good vibes to your daughter and you.
Orthognathic surgery? I had this done a few years ago. Sending all my good thoughts her way! It’s an amazingly complex surgery, and not a lot of surgeons even do it.
I had mine done to reposition my lower jaw, and the difference is incredible. I can actually breathe better, eat better, and I wish I had done it years ago.
Let us know how everything goes!
Good thoughts, for her and for the parents too.
Best wishes for an uncomplicated recovery.
The eating part is the big reason she’s having it done. It started messing up her digestion. My sister had the same surgery a couple decades or so ago.
I never realized, until a friend mentioned it in passing, that I literally ate weird. I would never take a bite of a sandwich head on. I had to bite it from the side, because my teeth did not touch (at all) in the front.
Your daughter will be amazed, and thrilled, at how much better life will be!
No sensible person dislike asparages soup. My thoughts go to you and your daughter
Good luck to her!! (and to you parents). I expect the first few days, she and you will be thinking “WHAT THE HELL HAVE I DONE!!” but it sounds like things will be so much better for her when she’s fully healed. As others have said, smoothies, shakes, etc. are her friends. Maybe add some protein powder to them.
I have that issue. But i was advised it wasn’t worth fixing. Mine is probably less severe. Also, my lower jaw is the shorter one.
Anyway, best wishes to P-man’s daughter.
Good luck to the P-daughter! I assume she’ll have her jaws wired shut? I had that done when I was 16, to correct a gap between my upper and lower jaws so big that my orthodontist’s calipers couldn’t measure it.
I’d suggest lots of soups, smoothies, and milkshakes. My parents tried blending up regular food, but it wasn’t a success; trying to suck down a slurry that once was a chilli dog is not a pleasant gustatory experience. I ate a lot of Ensure milkshakes that my mom doctored with vitamins and raw eggs. I still lost a bunch of weight, but on the other hand, I could eat as much ice cream as I liked.
Let’s see, what else can I suggest (bearing in mind this was some thirty years ago)? Make sure she pays attention to her lips; she won’t be able to lick them, so they’ll dry out. I had to pull off large chunks of dead, dry skin. Also, depending on the amount of swelling around the jaw, she might get big blood boogers in her nostrils. Look disgusting, but the feeling of relief when I pulled them out and could breathe a little easier is a sensation I still can vividly feel.
She’s going to be in some discomfort, but probably not as much as she or you fear. Good luck and a swift recovery!
I’ll go along with this, good excuse for lots of ice cream and puddings for a couple of weeks
We’re leaving for the hospital in a few minutes. She actually won’t have jaws wired shut, which was a surprise.
Hoping for the best for your daughter. I was 10 when I went over the front of my bicycle and landed on my jaw. Glad you’re not hesitating to get this done, the sooner the better. Left alone things don’t get better with time. So by lots of canned milkshakes, YooHoo, and the like. It’s tough for kids to go through this kind of thing so give her plenty of love.
Good luck and quick healing.
