Just watching “The Racial Draft” and laughing my ass off. He is the funniest thing on tv since the original Saturday Night Live crew. Thank you Comedy Central.
(the White Race just picked Colin Powell, but the Blacks made them take Condi Rice as a throw in).
Ohh, embarassing bragging rights. Skip, is this better than Pit points?
Sam, Chappelle is very funny. It’s too bad the show is no more, but there are at least 2 seasons of material still to catch up on (maybe 3… or even 4 I can’t remember). Go here for more videos. I recommend the one with Wayne Brady, if you don’t know who he is then this quick bio from wiki sets up why the sketch is so hilarious:
Having created a likable, family-friendly public image, Brady sent it up in a 2004 sketch on Chappelle’s Show, portraying himself as a street thug and pimp. The segment parodied the 2001 film Training Day.
Other classics include the one where Dave Chappelle is the leader of a White Power organization. He’s blind.
I always liked the “real world” skit where the one white guy lives with 8 black people. His roommate just got out of jail, and he makes the white guy pee sitting down.
There’s some very funny stuff on Chapelle’s Show, and Dave himself is unquestionably a talented guy.
But count me among those who think all the racial humor gets old. If everyone in the world had the same color skin, the show would be 45 seconds long.
And what’s worse, it’s not good-natured humor. It reinforces all the negative stereotypes of both blacks and whites. So that, if a bigot with a negative attitude toward blacks—or toward whites—or toward women, or men, or the world in general—were to tune in, they’d find plenty of reasons to think their negative feelings were justified. So, while I do enjoy the show, it all too often leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
While I agree a fair amount (but not all) of Chapelle’s show is race-based, I don’t know about the bad-natured part of it. A lot of it is making fun of the concept of racial stereotyping. True, it’s often by exaggerating some stereotype to the point of ridiculousness, and sometimes he’s not above trying to work the ‘laugh at the stereotype’ as well as making fun of racist stereotypers, but in the end there is more than just bad natured bigotry.
For instance, isn’t the racial draft ridiculing the idea that a person has to be reduced to a single racial stereotype? I mean, just asking what ‘race’ are Tiger Woods and Lenny Kravitz (claimed by the jews, by the way) is pretty much destroying the main foundation of racism, isn’t it?
And for non-racist segments, the beer ad is still a classic.
The worst part about his show being gone is that Comedy Central felt that his absence left some sort of racial humor vacuum and picked up Mind of Mencia as a replacement. That show is so awful, I get annoyed just seeing the commercials.
Two favorite things from the show: the Wife Swap where the black and white guys swapped. Now, every time I see Renee Zellweger, I think, “Who the hell is Renee Zellwedger?”
The Wayne Brady humor: “Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?” and “Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumble look like Malcolm X.”
I miss Chappelle. I hope he does some new stuff in some medium soon.
If you’re a Dave Chappelle fan, or even (perhaps especially) if you’re not, it would be worth your while to try to catch the Sundance Channel’s Iconoclasts episode with him and Maya Angelou. The premise of the series is that two famous people get together and chat - most of the pairs have been friends, but when Chappelle was asked who he’d like to be paired with, he chose Angelou because she’s a hero of his. The show gave me a lot of insight into the reasons he had for quitting his show. The two of them also have a fascinating discussion about how conditions for black people in America have and have not changed, as well as a spirited exchange about whether or not “the n-word” should have a place in the language.
I’m not even going to try to say that it’s not all jokes about blacks, whites, asians, hispanics, gays, dicks and pussies, but he can be a funny guy sometimes.
I think he has about 20 different ways of saying “vagina” that get past the censors.
“ooooh, hefe, you shot granny right in the panooch”.
