So David Byrne is coming to town sometime soon. I love the Talking Heads, but I haven’t heard any of his solo work at all. Would a Talking Heads fan enjoy seeing David Byrne live today?
I haven’t really kept up with him myself, but a friend of mine is a record producer and has worked with David recently (says he is a really nice guy who is introverted, yet happens to be a musician - very easy to work with).
Anyway, my buddy played me a 5.1 surround sound mix of a live performance David gave over in Britain. It was really good - some Talking Heads - a latin / funk remix of Life During Wartime that was great, some newer stuff off his solo albums, etc.
Bottom line, if you are looking for note-for-note TH songs, this won’t work. If, however, Byrne’s eclecticism and avant-gardeness is the basis of his appeal to you, you’d probably really dig him.
By all means go. I am a huge Talking Heads fan myself and never got to see them play (the anticipation of Stop Making Sense on DVD is the reason I initially bought a DVD player). I did get to see DB a few years ago and he puts on great show and about 50% of it was Talking Heads stuff.
I saw David Byrne perform a few years back at a small venue in Baltimore (Bohaggers?? I think.) It was very, very good. He wrote the majority of TH stuff so he has the rights to it and plays a lot of it with backup musicians and singers.
The show was also very “performance” oriented with costume changes and lighting.
He did “Psycho Killer” in this body suit like slim-good-body with a black light shining on him while he did these yoga-like moves on a table. Cool stuff!
slight hijack- have you heard his vocals on the song “Lazy” by Xpress2? It was a popular techno song in the UK a few years ago but never made it to the U.S.
I’d go. Byrne’s post-TH work has been excellent. Check out Uh-oh and Rei Momo. Both are on Luaka Bop, his own label.
I just got his latest album, and am liking it quite a bit.
Heh…you may ask yourself, “Is this concert worth seeing?”
And you may ask yourself, “Is his post TH stuff any good?”
I’d go.
