I know there’re some Pink Floyd fans on here, presumably that means there’re a few David Gilmour fans as well.
I’ve just had a listen to the single from the soon-to-be-released album On an Island.
First impressions are that I like it! It is instantly recognisable as Gilmour (or Pink Floyd), although not just a rehash.
It includes some interesting artists. Backing vocals are provided by David Crosby and that Nash bloke, (what’s his first name again?) Lyrics are by Gilmour’s wife Polly Samson who has written lyrics for him before. Rick Wright plays keyboards and Bob Close also appears on the album. For those who don’t know, he was Pink Floyd’s guitarist before Pink Floyd was Pink Floyd.
I think the Crosby/Nash backing gives it a nice 60’s feel to some of the vocals. Fans of Gilmour’s guitar work will not be disappointed.
Anyway, it is available to listen to at BBC Radio 2 (warning: Real Player required :(.) If the direct link doesn’t work, you want to “listen again” to the Steve Wright Afternoon show from Friday. The song is played 39 minutes into the show and again at 2:06 into the show.
I’d be interested in your thoughts. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
The single is also available as a download on iTunes. Gilmour’s website was also offering an exclusive track not on the album. And of course, if you saw/heard his Meltdown concerts, you’ve heard “Smile,” another track on the album.
From what little I’ve heard, his new stuff is melodic and quite pretty, but very mellow. Geldof heard some of the tracks last summer and says he told Gilmour to think about taking some speed.
I’m really looking forward to hearing how his concerts go. Evidently his US shows sold out in something like 60 seconds.
Heh heh, yes mellow. Well he always has been fairly mellow.
I can’t download from iTunes because they don’t have an Australian iTunes store. I’ve heard Smile though I hear that the album version is quite different.
I seem to have missed the exclusive from the website.
