DayZ: True zombie survival horror

Keep posting videos, SenorBeef. I don’t have the rig to support Arma 2 so I’ll probably never play DayZ, but I find the videos entertaining as hell.

Please thumbs up my videos when you watch them, geting some early thumbs up helps drive mroe traffic to them I think.

Arma 2 OA released the 1.62 patch today. I’m not sure what that means for the future of playing the betas with day z, but as of last night, it’s still best to launch using the same beta version you were before. Let the game patch (you have to), but still launch through dayz commander using the beta builds.

Anyone interested in being baller tonight, head towards Zelenogorsk. Or north of it along the road.

PvP isn’t usually my thing but going out in a small group of Dopers sounds promising. Maybe I shoulda picked up the games during the sale.

The game isn’t anything like any other deathmatch games out there. You can go hours between encountering another player, and the fights can often be suddenly and unexpected and chaotic. The suddenness of the attack, or the effort in stalking, combined with the real consequences of death really change the feel and nature of the fighting. People actually value their lives and take cover and move cautiously - it ends up being more realistic than any other video game because of that. It doesn’t feel like call of duty or something else where you’re just shooting everyone left and right at all.

Beef, I loved the intensity of your speech in that video. “Pop your head up again motherfucker!”

I did about an hour of boot camp today and yeah, the controls are a pain in the ass. But I’ll try to get some more practice in. Looking forward to playing DayZ with you guys.

The ballad of Johnny Bravo.

Ol’ Johnny Bravo spawned with a song in his heart.
He found hisself a crowbar and was off to a great start.
Then some zombies chased him into a barn, with a Winchester within.
He shot his way out and began his trek agin.

Then he died of thirst in the woods.

Huh, I thought a song about Johnny Bravo would involve more about muscles and getting punched by women he hits on.

There’s a serious lack of hot mommas in the Zombie Apocalypse.

Well played.
Last night was a mixed bag. We started with a car they jacked off some dude, but when we were taking the car out for fueling we got ambushed in the woods. The car moved very slowly offroad - probably less than a jogging pace - and was loud enough to track from far away.

Next time we have a vehicle, we’re going to have to be more cautious - we’ll need at least 4 guys. One drives, the other 3 go out to the left, right, and behind the car about 100 yards to screen it from ambushers - that way even if we lose the driver we’re unlikely to lose everyone and still retain the car. Once we hit the open road, we can all hop in because then we’ll have the speed to protect us.

We think they might’ve been in our neck of the woods to stock their tent, so I went searching around afterwards and found 2 tents loaded with gear. We ended up looting something like 3 M16s/M4s, 2 AKs, an MP5SD, 20-30 mags of various types, about 10 canteens, and some medical supplies. Ran them all back to our tent. So if those are the same guys that jacked our car, they’re not going to be too happy overall.

We used that stuff to gear up 3 new SDMB players - Tarwater, Johnny Bravo, and mutton time. We then ended up raiding the cities of Pustooschka and Vybor - although with Vybor we ended up turning away after the server seemed to be requiring us to shoot zombies 5 or 6 times with rifles and we ended up running low on medical supplies - and also that’s a bad area to be making lots of noise.

I am B ended up finding a our first bicycle, but then trashed it by trying to roadkill zombies with it. Did some hunting - delicious delicious boar - and ended up logged out near camp again.

There are 6 or 7 of us now spawned out around that area, so either tomorrow or friday we’ll get together and maybe raid up the western cities finishing with a barracks run.

Hey Beef! I’m at work right now but I think I’d like to try this out. So-I just download Arma 2 from Steam and this game comes along with it? I am hoping I can just download the thing in one fell swoop and be ready to start training/playing.

The instructions are in the OP, but you need more than Arma 2 - you need the operation arrowhead expansion to form Arma 2: Combined Arms because day z uses resources from both.

You will have to download the arma 2 beta versions and day z seperately, but there are programs for that.

I’m seriously considering plunking down $30 for the Arma II bundle, saved at least that much during the sale. Already have a Logitech headset and Ventrilo.

There is a DayZ standalone in the works, hopefully by Christmas, but the timeline depends on how quickly the parties can come to an agreement.

No one has confirmed, as far as I know, that there’s a standalone in the works. Certainly the guys behind Arma 2 (who hired the guy making day z) wouldn’t want to see the sales of their game dry up, so I’m guessing they’d have to get a pretty big cut of the standalone to license their engine.

This is what I was wondering…does the bundle off of Steam include the arrowhead expansion plus the beta versions you need? I will go back and re-read the OP. That video was really cool too!

Arma 2: Combined Operations on steam is what you’ll need to buy. If you already have Arma 2, you can buy just Operation Arrowhead and it will combine them into Combined ops.

Day Z and the arma 2 betas are free, you’ll just need a program like sixupdater or dayz commander to download and update them.

Other people are going to have to step up to take an active role in organizing our games, by the way - I’ll do what I can but often day z sessions are long and require a lot of coordination. In a few weeks I’ll be going out of town for a month or so and I may not have time to organize much of anything.

Confirmed by Dean Hall at Rezzed.

Hmm, I would hope there’d be some sort of discount for arma 2: CO owners.

Downloading now. Hope to join you when I’m not working or otherwise occupied.

I’m taking the plunge. Bought the Arma 2 bundle, already downloaded Arma 2 and am now downloading Operation Arrowhead. So once I’ve done that, I need to go to DayZ’s website and download it as well, yes? Is there anything else after that I need to do (patches, etc)?

Also, some random questions:

Reading about Arma 2, it seems the general complaint is that the command buttons aren’t intuitive…is this the same with Day Z?

When you die in Day Z, I assume you start all over with nothing? You lose all your gear, even if your body isn’t looted?

Is Arma 2 itself a game worth playing?

The controls are pretty much the same in both, yeah.

Yes, you lose everything when you die. It’s not a forgiving game.

You should get “Six Launcher” because it will update your DayZ and Arma II automatically. Once you are up to date, use “DayZ Commander” as your server browser, because it has friends lists that make it easy for us to all join the same severs. Just google both those programs, you’ll find them.
