I tried to install sixlauncher on Beef’s OP link but got a Babylon toolbar and not what I wanted. I have the Arma games…cant seem to get to the zombies…
Not exactly. They send you to Six Projects, where you’ll download the Six Updater, which you use to install DayZ.
SenorBeef is right about using DayZ Commander to select a server. Tried servers selected in Six twice, first time got booted before I even spawned! Second time, I spawned then got booted before I could actually do anything.
Right now, I’m outside a house and trying to figure out how to get in before I’m seen by the local zombs.
Most homes and buildings CANNOT be entered. If you see a kind of double arrow symbol when you are near the door, you can middle-click (default) and open the door.
Ah. OK.
The link in my OP to sixupdater seems to work. Maybe you’re hitting one of the false download buttons/ads that every download site has now? Pick a mirror.
You can apparently use day z commander to update the game. Click versions and then click install latest version for arma 2 / day z. I’ve never used Day Z commander to update so I’m not sure if it works, but if it does you should just skip sixlauncher and use day z commander.
Before you update, go to settings and check “launch using steam” and “replace original arma2oa files with beta so steam works” if you want to be able to use the overlay while in game.
Oh, and as far as enterable buildings… if you look at a window and just see a flat texture, it’s not enterable. If you look at the windows and see actual stuff inside, it’s enterable.
Had no problem getting & installing Six. Getting Six to stay connected to a server is the problem.
Now, where the heck are all the weapons? Ammo, I can find. Finally survived long enough to hit a barn, the one NW of Komarovo. Spawned on a beach near the Kamenka rail bridge, outran some zombs, and found…ammo, a hatchet, and bandages.
What? How does one go about telling the game one wants to use one’s newly acquired hatchet as a weapon?
Too late for me this time around, being as I ended up a zombie sandwich.
To use the hatchet as a weapon you right click it in your toolbelt from the gear screen while your primary weapon slot is open.
The lowest risk way to acquire weapons is to hit deer stands - they only have a few zombies and they often yield decent weapons. Higher risk is barns - more zombies and more player attention. Higher risk still are fire houses (2 story building with a 2 story tower), churches, and grocery stores in buildings. The latter two will only spawn handguns I think. The ultimate risk is barracks, but that’s pretty advanced stuff. Occasionally you will find a crashed helicopter somewhere and it may have very good military grade weapons.
Weapons can spawn elsewhere too but those are the more reliable places to get them. The beanfinder map covers the high yield spots.
Okay, so we’ve got around 5-7 geared up people somewhere in the zelenogorsk-vyborg area in the west. So when we play tomorrow that’s going to be our staging area, we’ll probably meet up north of zeleno somewhere. Make your way in that direction if you want to get in on group operations tomorrow. Try to bring what gear you can, especially food and water - a group that big is going to require more than we’ll end up looting.
I am b discovered something tonight.
We steal massively tomorrow.
Head towards myshkino, northwest of zeleno. We’ll rally up tonight and raid in force. Bring your own food and water though - this camp is relatively lacking in it.
By the way, everyone who intends to play with us, please friend me on steam. I’ve been thinking about creating a steam group for SDMB day z players for announcement and discussion but I guess we can mostly use this thread. The group would make it easier for everyone to add others to their friends list though.
In any case, I should keep a master list of people who play with us and their steam names to make coordination easier. It’s also better if you play the game with the steam overlay up (enable options in day z commander, mentioned a few posts ago) so you can receive messages to hop on vent.
The War Z seems to be pretty blatantly ripping off the concept of Day Z, but if it’s designed from the ground up to be what it is, rather than cobbled together with lots of limitations like Day Z is, it may end up being pretty good.
To echo that, what irks me about DayZ is nothing about the design, or even the seemingly-goofy controls, but Severe Death Penalty + Glitches Galore. Either one on its own would be tolerable, but both together can be really frustrating. It is so easy to “die” from glitches (personal experience, once each: from simply crawling around a corner of a building; and jumping about 18 inches down).
If whatever may come after DayZ can fix the glitch, it would be mucho mas fun.
But I still applaud the effort.
I’ll be back and able to play in about 3 hours probably. If you guys want to start hopping on vent and hooking up, maybe raid a grocery store or two, go ahead. Head into the general vicinity of myshkino, NW of zeleno.
After we raid the camp on that server (US 917) I think we should switch to a server with name tags. If there are going to be 5+ of us, and some of us new, we run more risk of accidentally shooting each other, or being slow to react to shoot an enemy than any benefit in increased visiiblity. We’ll gear up and server hop.
Weird. I can get into the game using SixLauncher but when I click on my Dayz Commander icon, I get a little rectangular window saying “Loading” then…nothing happens. Anyone else get this issue?
And what is “our” server again?
Ah, nevermind. It puts like a little “broken” window up on my desktop and when I click on that it maximizes. Weird.
US 917 is pinging above 700 for me.
So US 917 is our server?
I just tried to jump into that server using Dayz Commander…my ping was 73ms…but it hung on the load screen and I never got in. Will I ever get to pop my cherry?
