DC Universe Online

Apparently it’s plagued by bugs and bad design.

On thing on the positive I found. The game does 3D battles better than anything I have ever played. I just did a few Green Lantern vs Sinestro Corps battles and it was weird at first. Most games just do flying as a 2d battle with people at different heights, but this was a true 3D strategy required which took a good bit of breaking instincts and thinking before I was very effective.

Its hard to explain but just a subtle difference that was pretty cool.

I thought I had read the Green Lantern stuff was not ready and would be added to the game later (probably closer to the movie release I would guess). Not true or did it just mean you can’t have a ring as a Player Character?

It’s in the game for NPCs and an interesting tactical situation. Obviously a game can’t recreate the creativity of the real ring power, It’s smushed into about 5 attacks of glowing beams, anvils and bubbles. I don’t know if they plan to make some PC abilities though.

One of the forms of PVP in the game in the game is called ‘Legends.’ It allows you to take the role of a DC character in an instance and duke it out with other players. I don’t want to speak for wolfman but that’s probably how he wound up playing a Green Lantern. You start out with one character, (I’ve started with Robin on all my heroes), and as you play the various instances you earn these things called ‘marks’ which allow you to purchase access to other characters. Haven’t done much PVP yet so I’m not entirely sure how it all works.

On a side note, no there’s no ring powers for PC’s right now. Rumor mill has it that there’s going to be an expansion before the end of the year focusing on Green Lanterns and the Corp, to coincide with the movie. I don’t know if it’s just going to be an update to add in the powerset or something more substantial. I haven’t seen anything official though, so it appears to just be speculation at this point.

I wasn’t playing a Green Lantern actually. I was playing my normal character, who flies, in quest locations which was the scene of a medium scale GL vs. Sinestro war, with a couple dozen NPCs on each side. The finale is an instance with John Stewart vs Sinestro, but it isn’t one of the more clever boss battles.

On a side note, in typical comic book fashion, they hand-waved away the lack of creativity by saying that there is an earth originating force that is interfering with the rings full power. Whether I will find and destroy that force will likely be found out in a couple more issues ;).

Huh, I stand corrected.

My main is a flying brick but I’m only 14th level right now and gaining slowly. I’ll be interested in seeing if I encounter the same quest.

Yeah, that actually makes some sense. For non-players, the basic premise of the game is that there’s a large scale invasion from Brainiac targeting all meta’s, both hero and villain. It could, conceivably at least, justify a dovetaling of the quest lines.

And I’ve encountered first game breaking glitch.

Found this being discussed on the official forums today and had to do a little searching to figure out what the “flying + brawling” exploit was exactly. Word from the devs is that they’re aware of this problem now and are working on a fix.

My main is flying+brawling and I had never noticed this before.

Interesting do they know what all of the affected attack sets are?

I’ve heard it confirmed for brawling and martial arts, which are the two unarmed sets. Beyond that I’m not sure.

Sorcery+Hand Blasts, I’m told.

Everyone’s BATMAN!

Anyone here playing on the PS3?

I’ve been playing on PS3 for a few days now and really like it. It can be buggy, but no more so than other MMO releases and considerably better than some.

The feel is a lot different than using a PC, and more to my liking (the 53" screen helps).

I haven’t played long enough to really give much of a review, but I like the graphics, the story, and the feel of combat so far; and that’s a pretty good start.

I started playing over the weekend. I made a flying brawler and I’m up to level 9. It’s been a lot of fun so far but I’m feeling kind of lost.

As I’m playing I keep comparing it to WoW, which I’ve been playing for about four years, and it’s not really fair because the games are so different. The thing with WoW is I know where everything is and where to go on any race on either faction so playing a new game and feeling lost some of the time is to be expected and I keep telling myself that.

I’m playing on the PC and it does feel like it would be easier on a game pad than a keyboard so I ordered one and we’ll see how that goes.

The game atmosphere is awesome. I love interacting with all the heroes and seeing players costumes and names. I went to Gotham for the first time last night and seeing the Bat Signal in the clouds was really cool.

I also went to the Watchtower for the first time last night and got completely lost and couldn’t find the portal back to Little Bohemia Police Station so as soon as I found one back to Metropolis I took it and had to fly across the city back to the LBPS.

I ran into a funny situation in the LBPS. There were 3 hulk clones named Green Smash, Incredible Bulk and Big Green all standing in front of each other doing emotes. It was funny.

So far the game feels like City of Heroes which I played for about 6 months and then got bored of because the grind was so repetative. Go kill some Skulls, now go kill some of those guys, now go kill some more Skulls, now go kill those other guys again and now go kill some more Skulls. I got three characters into the late 20’s before I quit. DCU still feels new and fresh.

I didn’t notice the glitch that Jihi mentioned so I’m going to have to exploit it while I can before they fix it. I don’t PVP so I won’t be cheating other players.

One thing I really love is how you can get credit for killing a mob even if you didn’t tag it first. With the game still being new I’m still running into four or five people all trying to beat up on the gorillas or brainiac robots all in the same little area so that’s really nice.

From what I understand the game is nothing like City of Heroes at all save for being in the superhero genre. Something of a stretch to call it an MMO too.

It has the City of Heroes “feel” to me but IMHO it is way better. Basically flying around in a super hero costume in a giant city is what makes it feel like City of Heroes to me.

I’m not sure why that would be. It has almost everything that you would expect MMOs to have in common - power sets, levels, xp, wandering mobs, instances, quest givers, quest lines, vendors, mail system, grouping, raids, zones, chat channels, servers, pvp, threats of the nerf bat, people bitching on forums :), release bugs, poor instrutions, solo vs. group debates, tanks, controlers, healer, dps-ers, hit points, mana, etc. Oh, and a lot of people playing online together in a shared world.

I don’t know what else it what take to make it an MMO.

Well as far as I can tell, I haven’t done a lot of investigating though and I’m only level 9, there is no crafting system. Which I do love when I get bored with questing but still want to play a game.

Yup - definitely no crafting, which can be a big part of MMOs for some people (although I never got super into it myself). But if I recall correctly, COH didn’t add that for quite some time after release.
