De Paris, Bonne Année à tous les Dopers, et Meilleurs Voeux pour 2008!

Best wishes to all the Dopers for 2008 around the world! (The Ozzies, Kiwis and east Asians are probably already done celebrating. Hope they had a good time.)

Mrs. Piper and I have just finished a little New Year’s Eve supper in our little appartement in Montmartre. A quarter of the Galette du Roi has been eaten, and no King or Queen of the New Year has yet been proclaimed Chez Pipers. The suspense mounts…

Shortly, we will be leaving for the Champs Elysées, with our little demi of champagne (the French don’t have a problenm with open liquor, so long as you’re well-behaved… :stuck_out_tongue: )

À vous aussi, Monsieur le Piper. I hope you and Madame are having a good time aux Champs Elysées. You’d have rung the New Year in by now.

It’s the morning after the night before here and we’re in clean-up mode, collecting all of the rubbish left in our street by last night’s revellers. Always a great way to start the New Year! At least it’s not too hot this morning.

And a Happy New Year to you too. About your Galette du Roi, it is usually eaten on January 6[sup]th[/sup], so you will have another chance at it at the end of the week.

detop is right. La Galette des Rois is usually eaten on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6th.

Years ago, I also spent time not very far from the Moulin Rouge (on la rue Lepic, to be exact). I had a wonderful stay.

De Montréal, Bonne Année à vous et aux vôtres; meilleurs voeux pour 2008–

We are staying on rue Lepic near the Moulin Rouge - you wouldn’t by any chance have stayed in Alex and Isis’ apartment? Pepone’s is across the street (and always seems open).

As for the galette, we won’t be here on the feast of the epiphany, so we had to jump the gun. Plus, they seem to be selling them for New Year’s - don’t think they would keep until the 6th.

And, Madam Piper would like to know who is king this year… I think she already knows.

(bolding mine)

So, is don Camillo nearby also ?

heard a lot of Italian being spoken, especially around Notre Dame, but so far, no fiery Italian priests. will keep my eyes open…

No, I didn’t stay in Alex and Isis’ apartment. One year, we stayed in a small hotel that belonged to friends of mine, the Prima Lepic. I returned to spend a month in Paris after my husband died a few years later, and stayed at their hotel again. The hotel was then sold and they bought a new more swanky one, Hotel Luxembourg Paris in the 6e arrondissement, where we stayed the last time we went to France (new husband, of course).

When we stayed on Lepic, we got to spend sometime on their rooftop terrace (the owners’ apartment was the top floor of the hotel, and a terrace. What a view.

Enjoy your stay in France!!

My wife, daughter, stepson and his partner spent New Years Eve on the Champs Elysées. They had a really good time.

They have been doing a European coach tour (Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Lucerne, Paris) as it is my stepsons first trip to the UK. Our son was not well enough to travel due to migraines, so I was at home with him.
