This movie “DEAD MAN” with Johnny Depp as William Blake ‘holy shit’!! What a movie. Loved it the symbolism the cast and the music.
The theme was one of death and change, but the stellar performance by Depp and Farmer ‘nobody’ was the icing on the cake for a morbid theme that resonated in the hearts and minds of most.
The cast includes Robert Mitchum, Lance Henrickson, Billy Bob Thornton, Mike Wincott. And more and more big names. I have a question however. For those of you who know the movie The short scene with Billy Bob Thornton WTF was that all about. Were they portraying gay transvestite cowboys? WTF was that? hahahaha!!! Any Ideas?? Comments on the movie?
It’s been years since I saw it, so I can’t comment on that specific scene, but I remember really liking it at the time. It was quite a welcome relief from what I seem to recall as on otherwise flashy movie season.
(One scene that really stuck in my mind was when he looked out the train window to see all the skinned buffalo that the white men had left to rot. Very striking. I’m thinking Neil Young did the haunting soundtrack as well, is that right?)
Yes Voguevixen Neil Young did do the eerie soundtrack to DEADMAN. I actually bought it, and it is a wonderful track to have in the backround on rainy days, or when writing…I love it…Its what draws one to the movie as well.
Thats right Skip Crispin Glover was in it. He rocked in the movie, even though it was short and sweet little appearance. Haven’t seen him since Back to the future! hahaha
There’s a lot I like about this film. Being a big Jim Jarmusch fan, I bought it when it came out on tape, then again when it came out on DVD. I just watched it again a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine finally rented it and I got an e-mail from her. She didn’t like it. (She wanted to see it for Johnny Depp.) Oh well. I told her Jarmusch’s style was leisurely pacing.
Well, aside from the movie hinted at by my screen-name, Dead Man is my favourite film ever (as well as maybe Rock and Roll Highschool for a change of pace).
I saw it three times in the cinemas, and can’t bring myself to see it on a small screen - the opening scene is just so breathtaking, with the Crispin Glover character coming out with coal all over his face, and the buffaloes and Gibby Haynes getting ‘serviced’ in an alley, Iggy the transvestite … too much amazing stuff.
As for the tobacco references, if you see Blue In The Face, it has a nice scene with Jim Jarmusch smoking and talking about having his last cigarrette, which makes a nice companion piece ;).
