I like to bone up on issues before family dinners, waiting until one of the poor kids is floundering, because s/he is to well-raised to tell parents, grandparents, and their assorted siblings what they really think, and start supporting them. “Actually, Niece is right, the bill says …”. They might disagree with me just as much, but they can’t laugh me off.
I believe it is ad hominem in that it tries to portray the poster as a certain type of person and does not deal directly with the words the poster posted in this thread.
I think my jokes are hilarious though, either way. I am an independent, am married, and have a cat.
I think racism and sexism run along a continuum, and everyone falls somewhere on that line. I don’t believe many people are truly above racism, its more that on a 1-10 scale maybe leftists are a 3-4 and modern conservatives are a 5-6. with the alt right being more of a 7.
As a leftist, I’ve had people treat me like I’m evil because I eat meat. I can understand their argument, but I still eat it. I’ve had people treat me like I’m evil because I support abortion. By the same token I treat people like their evil for supporting sex offenders (Roy Moore, Trump, probably Kavanaugh, etc). So there is ample reason to call almost everyone evil if you look hard enough.
I don’t know what the answer is, or if there even is one. I think Americans are so divided that it’d be better if we focused more on letting cities and states self govern more.
The problem a lot of us have with Obama critics is that a lot of the criticism of him was false or exaggerated, but not only that but Trump actually does all the things the right has accused Clinton and Obama of doing.
Embarassing America?
Destroying our reputation?
Being incompetent?
Being a ‘celebrity’?
Being a sex offender?
Having a charity that is actually a criminal organization?
Working with Russia?
Being in a sham marriage?
The list is endless. It bothers us because the right accused the Obamas & Clintons of tons of made up crimes, and they don’t care when Trump actually commits those same crimes and moral failings. It makes it hard for us tot ake their criticism seriously.
