Dear Co-Worker: Control Your Violent Streak

Dear Steo: [name changed to protect…etc. etc.]

Your voice, whether on the phone or in real-life conversation, has three levels: loud stage whisper, intolerably loud, and ridiculous. For this reason, I am aware of the following things:

  1. You are dealing with no small amount of personal drama. We’re talking violent altercations with an ex-girlfriend, custody battles, and disagreements with your lawyer. Although much of this drama seems to have been instigated by you, I have some sympathy for your plight.

  2. The issues mentioned in (1) have affected your work performance. In fact, you have spent the bulk of the last two days in meetings that would determine whether or not your position with the company was at all tenable.

The meat of my rant is as follows:

*Please refrain from emerging from a meeting and loudly remarking, “I’M GONNA GET MY GUN SO I CAN GO POSTAL.” This remark, while apparently in jest, tends to upset those around you.

In addition to your verbal indiscrections, I also request that you not leave notes for people that say, “California has some nice attractions. You should see them before I destroy the state.” *

Oh, and for the love of all that is good and proper, PLEASE STOP REFERRING TO YOUR LITTLE GIRL AS “my seed”.

Thank you.

Yeah, we had one of those.
Never make the following comment; “I’m going to bring my gun to work so I can kill you all”
Even if you are kidding. Especially if you have just slammed your door so hard stuff fell off the walls on either side whilst screaming “shut the fuck up!”

Control? I’d call security and have his ass hauled out of the building! Let professionals sort out if he’s kidding or not.

Umm, you know, there’s no rule that those who speak never do. If i were you I’d be very concerned, not just annoyed. The casual remarks are one thing. The notes go pretty damn far over the line and if I were you I’d get rid of the guy, take his keys, and hire security.

Holy crap! I agree that this is not something to joke around with: an employee that makes a threat like that ought to get fired immediately, and the police should be called to file a report. That’s a hostile work environment if I ever heard of one.

Daniel

That sound you should be hearing is the alarms going off in your head. This guy is on the edge. Saying something like this once is a joke. Twice is a sign of being in a bad place. You have multiple instances of statements and notes that mention violence. Talk to your boss. Talk to his boss. You have the right not to work in an environment where you think you might be subject to violence.

Although, the “seed” thing is kinda funny.

That is one tolerant workplace you got there. Must be a small shop or else you guys keep your mouths shut. That kinda thing will get most people sent home first (w/or w/o police escort) and then terminated thru the mail.

Protocol in something like that should be either termination or psychiatric evaluation (risk assessment). I’m union and we don’t tolerate that kinda shit.

Umm… yeah. I can understand your being sympathetic to his plight and all, but saying that you should see the state before he destroys it is completely over the top. I second/third/nth the opinion of having him arrested and barred from the premises until he can control his violent ejaculations.

Wow. Where I work, you would be out the door in minutes for saying something like that. Security would be called and you would be escorted to the door, and they would bring you your things.
