I certainly wouldn’t be considered a fan of december’s posting style, and will generally call him on his miscues etc. And, frankly I think that he’s admitted to what essentially is called ‘trolling’ (ie that he’ll intentionally exagerrate posts to get reactions).
However, the OP here isn’t bringing anything new. december does seem to be somewhat toning down the bile foaming rhetoric lately. I see no particular point to flame for past deeds in this case. and truth is many of the conservatives on the board have been calling him out for his tactics.

RE: the stats thing - I am continually amazed at his occupation vs. his handling of stats here, but I digress. It wasn’t worth pitting - merely point out that his numbers are derivative of some one else’s half baked pull it out of my ass stat (studies show that 6/5ths of people don’t know statistics), which makes his assumptions a half assed derivative.
RE; the guilty quote - I believe that what he was attempting to say was that while there hadn’t been a trial yet, there was a substantial amount of evidence (note that I"m not suggesting that assesment is correct), and hence she’s probably ‘guilty’ - but I believe he was talking about the ‘real’ sense vs. the legal sense. IOW, a person in our system is presumed innocent until found guilty in a trial (unless of course it’s overturned on appeal, but again I digress), however they may in fact be guilty of the crime, regardless of outcome of the case. He worded it poorly tho.
So, no, I still don’t see any particular recent ‘cause du jour’ that would explain the need for this.

Well Ace0Spades, you have a bit of a point here. The word “appear” has two relevant meanings:
I was thinking of #3, and on that basis my statement was accurate. Under #4, my statement would have been inaccurate.
However, since I actually described the situation (arrested, charges filed, no trial yet, lots of evidence), my meaning ought to have been clear.
Regarding the 99.9%, if you see no difference between locking up 30 Americans vs. locking up 300,000 Americans, AND if you’re so certain you’re right that someone who disagrees ought to be pitted, then you’re entitled to your opinion, but I don’t agree.
December, you have exhausted my patience. Were I a better man, I could no doubt hammer through your indefinitely thick head that deciding whether to care about infringement of civil liberties based on percentage of people affected is a disgusting thought.
But as I say, I tire of your tendentiousness. Do you remember that Ashcroft cited a precedent for these arrests? That precedent involved 8 people. What equally irrelevant percentage of that nation was that?

Ace, you are NOT innocent until proven guilty. You are innocent if you didn’t do the crime. You are guilty if you did do the crime. Period.
Now, if we are talking about the stance of our government with respect to incarceration, the government must treat you as innocent (pretty much) until the government proves you guilty.
This just happens to be one of my pet peeves. Even though the gov’t didn’t prove OJ guilty, I feel perfectly justified in considering him a murderer.
On Scale… I would say that scale matters very much when talking about crime. Whether it is 30 or 300 or 30,000 matters. To say that it doesn’t matter is nonsense. Obviously, civil rights are important, and nobody should just LET the gov’t trample over them, even for just 1 person. However, one CAN decide whether or not this is a major nationwide problem based on the scale.
