Dear George, I want to study Chinese...

There have been a lot of reports recently talking about the “new” focus on foreign languages (though last year was “The Year of Langauges”).

I’ve been looking around for how exactly this talk will materialize for people like me who want to study a “critical” language. I want to study chinese in Taiwan, but I have next to no money. Are there scholarships for people like me?

Anyone got any insight?

Just curious.

There are a couple of Defense Department run programs that could help you out, but you’re expected to have either a minimum knowledge of a difficult language or be moving into graduate studies; and you must be willing to make a serivce commitment to the Federal government following your completion of studies.

You might be able to get a job there teaching English and study Chinese as part of an exchange deal. I’ve no idea what the ESL job market there is, though.
