I just saw parts of “Nothing but Trailers” and my gawd. Here are a couple:
A new “Ben Hur”. The book’s original subtitle was “A Tale of the Christ” but the remake looks like a CGI mess. The trailer showed a quick glimpse of someone on a cross at least.
“Be My Guest” is a live-action adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast” - by Disney no less. Why? Oh yeah, $$$ I guess.
Disney are doing/have done live-action remakes of all their classic animated movies, some more removed from the source (Maleficent), some less so (Cinderella). Also Alice In Wonderland, Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon.
In addition to B&TB, Disney’s announced upcoming versions of Mulan, Dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Fantasia, The Sword in the Stone, The Black Cauldron, Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid.
The Fantasia one will be a revisit of The Night On Bald Mountain sequence, so probably something Maleficient-ish about poor misunderstood demons who are really Slavic deities. Call it American Demigods.
Live-action Sword In The Stone and Black Cauldron could actually be quite cool. Now to agitate for them to get Zhang Yimou for Mulan,…
No *Snow White *remake, but they probably figure that market’s saturated…
There’s no need to remake good movies. Bad movies should be remade, if they’re remade better. Nothing wrong with the idea of a remake, it’s just that the better the original was the less chance the remake will be worthwhile.
Black Cauldron? I’ve been waiting for a LOTR style production of the Prydain series for years. Somehow I doubt this will be it.
So far I’ve liked all of Disney’s remakes but it’s hard to imagine what their going to do with Fantasia.
Not a remake but let’s talk about poorly advised sequels.
They’re making Trainspotting 2. With the original cast.
The whole point of the movie was how self-destructive the characters’ life style was and how Rent Boy was trying to escape in order to survive. Coming back twenty years later and saying all those characters are still alive pretty much invalidates the first movie.
Incidentally, who’d’ve thunk the nostalgia piece with the other Hemsworth brother would be outperforming the one that got all the attention? GHOSTBUSTERS doesn’t look on-track to double its budget, but INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE – which I don’t recall anyone clamoring for – is at, what, $372m on a $165m budget?
Wonder which is more likely to get a follow-up project.
The gender swapping aspect might be fun. I could probably force myself to watch a wet shirtless Channing acting silly. And wet and shirtless.
It doesn’t sound like a horribly expensive movie to make so as long as they don’t spend a zillion dollars trying to make it a blockbuster it should do okay. Make its money back at least.
Sure, but all of that was decades ago. They want an updated franchise, so they can make money now and in the years to come.
Another example. If you’re familiar with the Hunger Games franchise, you might know that the last movie sort of ended things; the villain was killed, peace reigned throughout the land, and so forth. But they’re not going to let that stop them, as from what I hear, the studio plans a sort of prequel film.
The chariot race is actually *not *CGI (well not CGI except for when people/horses get injured) and took IIRC six weeks to film. However, I doubt that will end up mattering since the trailers make it *look *CGI, and most people will just assume it’s all fake. I really hope the film is actually good, since I love Jack Huston and want his first big budget title role to be a success, but man that really is one unnecessary remake.
And it’s being produced by Mark Burnett & Roma Downey so the evangelical Jesus factor is turned *way *up from the original.
A lot of those performances can’t be replaced though. Who do you get to replace Kaplan, Minerva, and Darwin? Richard Grant is still around, but if you’re going to re-use him, why bother? Gary Oldman is also getting rather long-in-the-tooth, and Alan Rickman is no more (and was too old). I haven’t seen a good, young, over-the-top villain actor in anything recent.
Andie MacDowell’s dolphin sound and Almond Joy’s sarcasm, while not large parts of the film, were still pretty perfect. (The other candy bars could probably be replaced though.)
That said, I’d like to see it, just to get more exposure for the original - which I think was snubbed for reasons that had little to do with the movie itself.
