Only partly Irish. “Buchanan” is a surname associated with Scotch-Irish Protestants. Also, and I could be wrong about this, but I remember reading somewhere that Pat Buchanan is mostly German on his mother’s side.
Of course, as a non-Catholic who has attended several Catholic schools, I’m probably too much of a “fellow traveler” to be trusted on this matter.
