Dear White People (spoilers)

Has anyone here seen it yet?

I really liked it. I think the movie hit a lot of truths home. I felt for Lionel. I know that feeling of not really being in with the black kids or the white kids and just wanting to belong to a group (which I’m assuming his big chop signified at the end). I cringed when Reggie called Sam “redboned.” I felt the white people were maybe too awful and clueless, but Sam’s marshmallow-faced sidepiece with his weak jawline played their white knighting foil well. But then again, some people really are stuck in their privilege like that.

Coco, though. Troy, too. Those two were probably my least favorite. They reminded me of the worst type of people from college. Coco (the nose job), who wants to look like Nicki but get treated like Katy, and Troy (the oofta), who serves as some Cosbyian wet dream of black ideals. They’re on that “New Black” shit.

Anyway, those are just some of my assorted thoughts on the movie. I’m curious what people here thought about it.

(Best audience observation: I think the white couple in front of my friend and me didn’t realize the credits had pictures of blackface parties. The look on the guy’s face as he stood up to leave and then just slowly sat back down was priceless. Why? That guy literally took a seat.)
