Death by Tan

I think that this is an Urban Legend, but my curiosity is getting to me.

When I was in High School (around 1994)a friend told me about a girl who wanted a good tan for her prom. She went to one tanning parlor, but they only let her get a “base” tan. Not happy with this, she went to several tanning places that day. She came home, her mother said, “What’s that strange smell?” The girl then dropped to the floor dead, her organs “cooked”.

This is to far-fetched to be true, but has anyone else heard of this? Also, is there any more factual case this may be based on?

Oh dear, will anyone post a reply? Other than me.

It’s definately an urban legend. The way I heard it, the girl wasn’t feeling well, and went to the doc who told her she only had X many days left to live because she had cooked her internal organs. Other than that I heard it basically the same as you.

Go to http://www.snopes.com and type in “tan” on the search bar. It’s the first thing that pops up. In the snopes version, it’s a bride-to-be who wants to get a tan before her big day, although other variations are listed.

This is an old, old legend. It is the namesake of Jan Harold Brunvand’s book, Curses, Broiled Again!.
