Death Table (not as morbid as it sounds)

Looking at some civic records tables you find the following information regarding the ages of certain people when they died. The information was as follows.

Samuel Clarence - 21
Chris Reynolds - 24
Clive Osmond - 27
Zack Newton - 30

Nick Banks - 41
Reg Underwood - 44
Alan Goldberg - 47

Harry Francium - 72
Robert Eckhart - ??

The tables title is headed DIED IN TRANSIT. The question is at what age did Robert Eckhart pass on and why? The answer might seem obvious but it’s fiuring out why which makes this one difficult so when you think you know, be sure to tell me why you think you’re right.

Ummm, they didn’t know how old he was, because he was lost at sea? Or, he died in transit of the birthing canal?

Well, I’d guess he was 75 because there were 3 years between each of the others, but that seems too obvious.

Let’s see here…

He was in an ambulance shortly before midnight, the day before his birthday. At 11:59, he flatlined. A brief rhythm was detected shortly after midnight, on his birthday, but then he flatlined again and was pronounced dead. When did he officially die? He died on his birthday.

That’s my guess.

Hmmm…is Voice ever going to come back and clue us in?

75 is right but thereis a specific reason why it’s 75. The correct answer is the reason rather than the actual number. This question is not a lateral one where you have to try to come up with an explanation for an unusual event so answers like he was lost at sea aren’t correct. I’m not going to give any more hints at this stage because all the other puzzles I’ve posted have been solved in 1 or 2 posts so I’ve put a bit more effort into making this one a lot tougher.

Keep trying!!

::brain cramps as she tries to figure this one out::

Don’t I get a 1/4 point or anything for getting the age right?
::goes back to thinking…starts smelling smoke::

Samuel Clarence - 21 - Sc is the abbreviation for Scandium, element 21
Chris Reynolds - 24 - Cr " Chromium, element 24
Clive Osmond - 27 - Co " Cobalt, element 27
etc.
Harry Francium - 72 - Hf " Hafnium, element 72
Robert Eckhart - 75 Re " Rhenium, element 75

So they all died when they were as old as the atomic number of the element whose abbreviation is formed by their initials. But I don’t know what “DIED IN TRANSIT” means.

zgystardst, you’re my new hero!

F-ing awesome, you are!

Damn, zgystardust, but that was impressive!

How in the world did you think of that?

“Hmm, I think I’ll take their initials and compare them to a periodic table. Yeah, this is standard procedure… Well, it WORKS, but my grandfather’s beard!”

Gee, thanks, everyone!

Speaker for the Dead: It’s all done with mirrors. Actually, Francium is also an element (#87 as it turns out), so that kinda nudged me in that direction.

Bravo, zgystardst!

congratulations, zgystardst! I now respect you more than anyone on the board!

<lip quivers>

applauds

Well done zgy, I honestly didn’t think anyone would get that. Yes, the initials do correspond to the chemical names of elements in the periodic table and their ages correspond to the elemnts atomic numbers. The elements themselves are known as TRANSITION metals, hence died in Transit.

Well done again.

zgystardst! In you we find the True Spirit Of Unca Cecil!
Mucho congrats!

Honestly, I figured it out before I saw the answer. The name “Francium” alerted me, and from there I just looked at the initials. Nifty brainteaser.

Thanks again, everyone!

Bravo Max! You and me, bro! GMTA!
