While the effects are never as dramatic as advertised the same could be said for a lot of traditional medicines like acupuncture and different forms of massage therapy.
With that said, I have some trouble with the notion that you can manipulate energy fields to make someone feel better. Perhaps it works to some extent the way faith healing works with people with faith, at least temporarily but I doubt you could make it work at more than a placebo effect level of efficacy.

With regard to his claim that science supports health benefits for reiki, the reality is that none of the linked studies posted by our master reikist backed his claims (and one, a systematic review of reiki, more or less completely contradicted him). Two of the papers involved reiki performed on rodents, which provided moments of hilarity but little else.

Hell-o, Mr. rich2600. The scientific method has eliminated small pox and triumphed over polio. It has sent men to the moon and let me see pictures sent from Mars. It allows people to fly in the sky and cross the ocean in a matter of hours. It can cure many types of mental problems that would have once been thought of as demonic possession. It allows us to know the chemical composition of stars thousands of light years away. It can predict the behavior of undiscovered sub-atomic particles.
Science has steadily expanded and incorporated new discoveries in an organized, reliable manner.
Opposing the science method are talented tricksters and bunko artists, along with sincere people who rely on feelings more than testing. These people don’t have a record comparable to that of the scientific method.
Any belief that relies on sources of energy that are essentially unknown to science should be treated with extreme skepticism. It would be nice to be able to politely greet everyone claiming to possess revolutionary information that has the potential to take mankind to a new level of understanding. It would be nice to discuss the claims of every such person with calm rationality.
It’s just not practical though: there are too many charlatans and eager idiots. If you want to claim esoteric knowledge you either need to be humble in the face of the scientific method’s successes, or you need eye-popping evidence.
