Honestly if trying to get someone’s goat in GD is jerkish than there are plenty of notable posters who should be banned. Pop into any thread on politics and you’ll see “heart-bleeding liberals” or “compassionate conservatism” or worse being tossed around and there’s little question that their purpose is to piss other people off. You could even make a halfway decent argument that Maeglin was trying to get december’s goat by starting that thread.

December is an idiot. We all know that. He couldn’t form a coherent argument if he used bricks, mortar, a complete set of blueprints, and a copy of Forming a Coherent Argument in 3 EZ Steps.
As for the slurs on the job opportunities for history and other liberal arts majors…having both breadth and depth in one’s education, with special attention paid to reading, writing, and supporting one’s POV with evidence is far more useful than confining oneself to one narrowly specialized field. It is also an excellent preparation for a career in law, technical writing, business communications, advertising, and any number of lucrative fields. In addition, liberal arts majors have the quiet satisfaction of getting literary, mythological, and historical allusions that leave the typical finance major scratching his pointed little head.

This is nit-picking bullshit. Regardless of what you think of his opinions, december is one of the politest posters in GD, or the whole board, for that matter. (especially given the shit he puts up with)
So he tweaked you. Hell, here on the SDMB, if I had a dollar for every time someone said “dear” in a subtly condescending way, I would be rich.
Same with “m’kay hon” or any other bullshit jibes heard often on this board.
I am not an apologist for december, (because I don’t think he needs one) and generally don’t agree with a damn thing he says, but some of you people are really reaching just to let him “offend” you.
I think some of you like to give december shit just to start a pile-on, so you can feel superior.

Maeglin, it’s pretty unusual that a poster gets singled out in GD the way you did to december by putting his name in the thread title. You could have started a new thread on feminist theory and simply posted a link in the initial thread to get his attention.
I also think that I speak for the majority of posters on this board when in that when I see a thread title with december’s name in it the first thing I think is that a pile-on is about to occur. I imagine that you’ve noticed the same phenomena and it makes me wonder if you started the thread with the specific intent of putting december on the hot seat and thus “getting his goat.”
I could very well have misread the situation, and if I did I apologize, but if you take a step back and imagine a different poster starting the same thread with the same title wouldn’t you be suspicious?
I’m sorry if anyone is left with the impression that I find this to be earth shattering or am terribly offended. I’m not.
I’ve found december to be condescending in the past. I don’t think he is polite. I find him to be patronizing. I also suspect his is purposely dense.
I’ve also never piled on before, never opened a pit thread about another poster. Never (to the best of my recollection) even commented about posters like Wildest Bill.
Calling someone “dear” may not be world ending type stuff. But it is RUDE and DEMEANING in a discussion on feminism.
December is either:
a) Clueless - in which case it is my duty to inform him that this is inappropriate in the discussion. I have done so. Had he said “gee I’m sorry” that would have been the end of it.
b) Thinks he’s being funny - in which case I treat it like someone telling homophobic jokes at work “You know, I don’t think that’s funny.” The answer “gee, I’m sorry.” ends it.
c) Being rude on purpose.
If anyone comes up with any other options, let me know.
December can call me dear all he wants. And every time he does I’ll reopen this thread and post to it and remind him that I do not wish to be called dear by him. No skin off my back. And, since I don’t really care want december thinks about me, nor do I care about the opinions of most people on the SDMB, I’ll do my little part for the “feminist cause” by being humorless in this one tiny little battle.
I get that feeling when I see a new topic that december starts – “Uh oh, it’s another wacky december thread, let’s see how many level-headed folks show up to shoot down his screwball arguments this time…”
