Deep sleep - should I be worried?

I’m not sure if my question belongs here or in IMHO, so would a mod please move this if necessary?

I used to be a very light sleeper … I would wake at the drop of a pin, and certainly every time I turned over in bed.

However, for the past year or so, there has been a marked change. Whether settling down for the night, or taking a daytime nap, I drop off as soon as my head hits the pillow, and wake up hours later (typically 7 hours overnight) in exactly the same position.

What really worries me is that I have been told I am impossible to wake up, until I awaken naturally. I have been shaken, shouted at, blasted with loud music … all to no avail! Why could this be, and should I be worried (apart from the obvious “what if there were a fire” type emergency)?

Some background - I am moderately overweight, have “mild” Spina Bifida, am currently recovering from major abdominal surgery (prior to which I had a routine ECG to check my heart) and have Type 2 diabetes (insulin-requiring). Re the latter, I always eat before sleeping, and test my sugar levels on waking - always normal. Also this sleep pattern predates my insulin use.

I searched the archives and found this column , but it doesn’t seem to “fit” … I generally feel very awake, and have no experiences of pre-sleep paralysis, etc.

Any ideas?

Julie

Sounds grand to me. I’m pretty mush the same - can’t be woken to save my life. I wouldn’t worry.

If you’re really freaked about the fire-hazard, put a smoke alarm actually in your room - I know that by the time the smoke gets there you haven’t got much time, but it’s better than nothing. And those suckers are LOUD.
