Definition of retirement

If an electrical engineer retires after 35 years on the job and at home spends a good part of the day trading in and out of stocks for monitary reasons, is he/she retired? certainly yes as far as electrical engineering is concerned but hes up every day 5 days per week reading, studying the market and trading. Can he honestly say he is retired?

Or, does retirement mean spending the rest of your life golfing, participating in hobbies, or traveling or charity work?

Just curious in what your definition is.

My definition is getting to do what you want to, when you want to. So if the engineer has always wanted to do daytrading, s/he’s retired.

As for me, that would include travel, hobbies, volunteering, Elderhostel stuff (I have friends who have filled whole summers with this - really cool classes and projects), who knows what else?

Of course, I’ve still got a while to wait (at least 10 years, maybe more)…
