DeLay Is Going to Bite It! Huzzah!

This just in…

Nip it in the bud, Andy! Nip it in the bud!

Oh, this is rich! This is primo! Tom DeLay (R-Undead) has been clearly named by one of the most intelligent and perceptive posters herein (who prefers to remain anonymous and preserve what shreds and scraps of modesty yet remain…) as the bellwether for the coming terms. If the remaining honest conservatives within the Republican Party smell weakness, they will turn upon, and rend him. Verily, and it couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.

They couldn’t swallow it. Finally, one more dose of rotteness could not be choked down, their consciences stirred, they… Or maybe not. Maybe they think that the Xtreme Right has become a political liability. Maybe they sense that the GeeDubya admin. is headed into some serious trouble, and they are keeping an eye on the lifeboats. These are a breed of insect with very highly tuned antennae, they sense tectonic movements the rest of us don’t.

I think they sense the coming Debacle. And this sense has translated into weakness in the previously impregnable position of Tom “The Hammer” DeLay. Note well: this had already been in the news, the stories about changing the rules to adapt to Texas ethical standards had already been done, editorial reaction already written, national outrage was pretty much zip. They were going to do it, and they were going to get away with it. Hell, they had gotten away with it, it was all over but the quorum call.

And then something happened, sometime within the last couple of days. It is possible that DeLay had a crisis of conscience, his sense of civic virtue overwhelmed his instinct for political survival and craving for power…ah, ha ha ha ha! Can’t do it, can’t type that with a straight face. Give me a minute to compose myself, giggling fits and all…

Tom Delay is going to bite it. Hallelujah, hosanna, and glory glory! Today’s pig is tomorrow’s bacon! And, yes, Virginia, there are some Republicans with integrity. Strike up the band, crack open a brew and let us drink to our political enemies! Good on ya, Tighty Righties!

Off topic, but - love the Barney Fife reference

Carry on…

They caved in to pressure from the people they are supposed to serve.

Imagine that. Listening to your bosses.

Ooooh, this is so sweet. His years of being a bully boy are coming back to bite him in the ass!!!

It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.

I was scripting a comic to make fun of them on this very “moral issue.”

I’m happy to hear you’ve informed me that’s one less comic about their hypocracy I can draw now.

I used to be a Republican in my younger days and I have been hoping since the election that the real conservatives and the moderates would get back in control of the party and bring some real integrity back to it. I may just go pour myself a drink, if indeed DeLay is really going to go. I vote in his district down here and have been wishing him gone for quite a long time…

Funny, but a total misinterpration of events. The house must cleaned (heh) for '06 and '08. 2006 is more important than sum realize, methinks. We are in striking range of a fillibuster-proof lock, if only for a few years, and if getting a few ducks in a row now will help, so much the better.

But hey, the world may be going nutty on us. I am over at one of my gun boards putting up a solid defence of Bill Clinton, so I suppose anything is possible…

I wonder if the news of Sears turning state’s evidence had anything to do with this little republican flip flop on ethical standards?

This is most disheartening. Friend Squink has been so infested with the cynicism of our times. Tom DeLay (R, Undead) has his Come to Jesus! moment, has turned from the path of the unrighteous and the wicked, and resolved to a higher ethical standing…a standing, mind you, that he was not coerced to accept!

And friend Squink’s suspicions are aroused because some two-bit, fly-by-night organization like Sears decides to roll over.

It is a sad commentary on our times, that a public servant like Ol’ Marse Tom, a pillar of the community and a shining beacon of integrity…BWAH-ha-ha-ha, chortle snicker giggle GUFFAW!!..

I haven’t laughed so hard since they shot Ol’ Yeller!

If Delay is indicted, then I think he should step aside, and probably even step down from office. And if he’s found guilty, then I think they should throw the book at him. And maybe smack him around a little, and then make fun of him when he starts to cry.

But I can’t say I’m the hugest fan of taking such pleasure in a public corruption scandal involving your political opposition. I doubt anyone thinks I’m on the mailing list for the Ted Kennedy fan club, but I’d be upset if he was indicted in a scandal. I like to think that our elected representatives are generally good people that are looking out for our interests, and I think we all suffer anytime one of them is brought down through corruption.

But as usual, you’ve made me laugh. So thanks for that.

Normally, I’d agree with you. But Tom DeLay has made a career out of being the biggest bullying SOB in politics. The man is as nasty as a constipated rattlesnake with shingles. In this case, it’s simply his own bad karma coming back to bite him in the ass.

Can’t say I’m too upset about this. I’ve seen plenty of pit threads over this case and like that the Lefties (D-Psychoville) have lost an angle to attack from. I’m curious, though, why 'luci is pitting Delay instead of praising the Republicans for showing integrity. Oh, wait, he’s a Dummycrat, isn’t he? Never mind.

I’m just curious here my friend.

Instead of justice being served, you see it as an attack lost by the left.

So you think ethics aren’t important?

:dubious:

That’s not very nice, Miller, flaunting your reading comprehension skills like that in front of Duffer. Kind of like asking Tiny Tim to admire your dancing shoes.

Oh, come now. Surely you can do better than get a dig in on the “Tighty Righties” while offering praise at the same time, can’t you? If it was genuine praise, just wondering where the insult fits into it. Why do I have the feeling a Republican could find the cure for cancer and you’d find a way to bitch about it?

The House foregoes a rules change to build toward a filibuster-proof majority? How big a majority in the House do they need to defeat a filibuster?

Oh wait…

In the Senate, obviously, but if Delay is going to be a stinking issue for a while to come, we need to take him out of the Dems arsenal for '06. At the pace these things go, can’t take chances. Gotta set the field nice and squeeky clean if we plan on gaining 5 more seats in the Senate. Not gonna be easy, mind you.

Because the Republican would probably want to charge people money before giving them the cure. And they’d probably object to a 9th Circuit judge finding a constitutional right to be free from cancer.

Greedy, selfish bastards. Won’t someone think of the children!?!

Right. And a Democrat, before releasing said cure, would want to ensure that the funding that once went to cancer research would go to some overblown social program rather than terminating the funding and giving it back to the people?

Aren’t stereotypes fu…err, I meant stupid?

Thank God I was smart enough to register independent.

In Machiavelli’s “The Prince” there’s a section which I remember vividly, because I have so often been reminded of it so often over the years, in which Machiavelli advises the forward thinking prince to handle a rebellious province this way: put a real bastard in charge, a ring-tailed a-hole who’ll oppress the living shit out of everyone and rule with an iron fist. When he’s got the populace really roused with all the iron-fistedness and such, march into town and summarily execute him, or throw him in gaol, and declare that you had NO IDEA what a bastard the guy way. (Later, you can rehabilitate him and send him to another province if you like.) Meanwhile, the people all love you and declare you their hero, etc., because you got rid of that bastid. Province quelled, you’re in charge, etc.

Not that I’m cynical or everything. I’m just saying, it’s a very old technique.
