Dell Inspiron 6000

Does anyone here have one?
Do you like it? Any problems with?

I’m looking at buying one for a Xmas gift.
1.83G Pent 4 M
with the upgraded screen
and the 9 cell battery
about $1200 at dell.com

Thanks,

Husband has one, with wireless, upgraded screen, battery, & memory. He passionately loves it, swears it is totally problem free and the shiniest thing since sliced bread.

I, on the other hand, hate laptops and touch pads with the white hot fury of at least 47 suns. Spring for the wireless mouse.

Since this isn’t really about “arts and entertainment,” it was posted in the wrong forum. I’m going to move it from Cafe Society to “IMHO” where I suspect you’ll get a wider and better range of answers.

Do a Google and you’ll find lots of FREE Dell online coupons that will knock HUNDREDS off the price of many Dell notebooks, desktops, etc. Again, I say FREE Dell coupons

Most appear to be legit; Dell can confirm, but the responses I’ve seen on various message boards is that these Dell-only coupons are the real thing. BTW, sometimes you have to spend a bit more at Deel to qualify for the extra-steep discounts.

Dell has a series of dollar off coupons now, with the best being 750 off a 1999+ notebook.

You can totally load up a 6000 and then use the 750 off to get the price back around 1250. I’d recommend this.

I’d also start with the base system, since many of their other systems (ie gaming machine, etc) automatically give you an “upgraded” warranty that adds hundreds to your base cost. I go with a 1 year warranty. IF the warranty is going to cost me more than 200 bucks, I figure I can replace most of the breakable parts (assuming only one of them breaks) for that. CD drive, battery, hard drive, RAM, all of that costs less than 200.

I just took mine out of the box last night and this is my first SDMB post with it. So far so good. I don’t have the updated screen but the total for it with all the coupons and discouts it set me back $996.

You can find most of the Dell coupons listed at Techbargins and Ben’s Bargain Center. They usually have the same coupons, but on occasion one will have something the other doesn’t. I used one to pick up an Inspiron 9300 in July that I was able to load with quite a few features and still get a decent price on. Of course now it would cost a lot less, but such is life in computer purchasing. :stuck_out_tongue:

I got a Dell Inspiron 6000 from my workplace as a loaner, since I do a LOT of work at home. I LOVE the wireless G card (which prompted me to upgrade my router at home), and I’m getting used to the wide screen, which I hated at first.

The touchpad is not pleasant to use, but I have a USB mouse that I use instead. The only time I use the touchpad is if I am running on battery power, which doesn’t happen often.

There is also a minor annoyance with the keys on the keyboard. For some reason, they are square without rounded corners. When you press down on one key, it goes down lower than the edge of the keys around it, so unless I hit the key squarely in the middle, my finger grazes the edges of another key as I release the key I pressed.

However, it is fast and reliable (so far).

I’ve had mine for about 6 months and I love my laptop so much! It’s widescreen, 60g, , 1.6 GHz and 512MB of RAM. With that $750 coupon, I bought my laptop for $825.

It runs like a dream, but then again, my old laptop was crap and I only use the basic stuff, just to give you an idea.

I love mine. I’ve had it for 6 months; zero problems. I bought my own but most people here at work have a work-provided Dell and love them.

My experience with Dell was universally good. Beware, though; both my mom and a close friend had weird encounters with shipping and technical support. If possible, wait until after the Xmas rush.
