Demanding cites for things that would take you 2 second to look up is lazy

It’s called Down Under for a reason.

Well, that cracked me up.

Perfect. Thank you. I dropped that little reference in there as a trap for the Americans. Would they catch that it was a US-specific reference?

Seems they did. After you reminded them.

I figured the local legit term was “LP” for “loo paper”, and there’s probably some more … colorful … slang as well.

“Because I don’t have to be a nice person and you can’t make me be one!” - Too many people

What’s always disappointing to me is the large numbers of humans who just don’t care what others are inconvenienced by.

My Bitchin’ BMW’s taking up the last two spaces in a small parking lot?
So what, Miss Toyota-That’s-Cheap-To-Repair?

Nobody gets my Burning Monkey Solitaire song references?
Well, you’re… conventional.

You grannies can’t hear James Taylor’s acoustic songs because me and Biff and Boomer are laughing uproariously?
Chill out, oldies! … (my current peeve from the other night)

Even in Australia. (Now, how many people will get that reference?)

I recently ran across the term “bog roll” and it took a few moments to figure it out from context. I think it was UK, but might be used in Australia, too.

I believe you mean that your Bavarian Motor Works is taking up two spaces, you insensitive clod.

Um, AkTuAlLy Bayerische Motoren Werke, though it happens to translate neatly to Bavarian Motor Works in English, preserving the acronym.

AkTuAlLy “BMW” is an initialism. Acronyms are pronounced as words.

(At this point someone steps in to insist that they and everyone they know has always pronounced it as “Bemwa”.)

Bem Em Vay, bitte.

While I know that, who the heck actually uses the word “initialism”? Plus the dictionary now has “initialism” as the second definition for “acronym,” anyway.

ACRONYM?

You mean, “Aroused Citizens Representing Oppressed New York Minorities”?

KFC is an example. It no longer means Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Not true. I am aware of the show. Watched a few eps even. But didn’t watch enough to know a character’s name out of context. In context “oh that guy. I just experienced someone who talked like that!”

@LSLGuy makes the point of knowing your target audience.

And for most cases on this board the answer is not always a casual chat open to all (although is almost always in IMHO), and is rarely an esoteric narrow focus discussion with aimed only at a very few.

Oh it is definitely for esoteric subjects! But the nature of the board, the predominant common thread of those who participate here, is that it attracts those curious to hear and learn about esoteric things that they up to that moment knew little about. They may just lurk in that thread but they read with interest. And may ask an intelligent question or two even.

Unless the OP misses the mark of who the crowd is.

A link to how the character talks would have taken the OP a couple of seconds to provide and allowed a wide audience to participate.

@Snarky_Kong would rather dozens of others do that work multiple times than the OP baking the effort realizing that a sizable fraction do not know who the character is out of context anyway. That is idiotic.

Because we know

Flippin’ like a pancake, poppin’ like a cork
Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork

Do you recognize that? If not, congratulations, you’re under 60 (or over 70).

Tra la la, la la la la

ETA: Dsmmit @Little_Nemo for sneakin’ in. Trying to reply to @Johanna 2 posts up.

FTR I’m 66. Do not recognize. Though admittedly I’m not good at pop culture or entertainment of any era

So FWIW I invalidate your assertion.

I thought it was Arcane Capturing Rod of Never Yielding Mystery
(let’s see who gets that reference)

Truer than you know.
I have bialys in the oven right now.

I am too. Rather, I will be in a few months. Back in 1968 or '69 we had the Banana Splits record album. The blurb on the back said, “If you’ve never heard of the Banana Splits, welcome back from the Arctic Circle.” How long ago those days seem now…
