I haven’t seen the ads for this show, but I will join the crowd in saying that I love his stand-up, I think he is hilarious beyond hilarity, and agree with the “live action xkcd”
I thought the ads looked kind of dumb, but after hearing him on Fresh Air I think I’ll give his show a chance.
I’ll check the clips when I get home (blocked at work). When someone mentioned he had been on TDS, I vaguely remembered a “youth” reporter or whatever. Suspected it might have been he. My vague recollection was that those were not my fave TDS bits…
BINGO! We have winner.
While you might expect an advertisement to contain the element of “here is something new you might like, please try it.” I think in this case it’s “here is something you already like, we gave him his own show.”
Ooh. Don’t do that. Stock in Demitri Martin just went down.
Well, he’s actually about 35. So, the ‘young kid’ tag might be a bit misplaced (though he does look very young).
Agree with the general sentiment here regarding Martin’s funny status. The roommates and I can’t wait for the show, though admittedly the ads leave a bit to be desired.
Dinsdale, why do you hate the children?
Will this show feature any performances by The Crazy Dogs?
I agree with all those who said this. Hope the show captures some of that quality.
Maybe they can write a song and then someone can do a cover of it 12 years before it was written.
I love Demetri Martin’s stand-up so I’m willing to give this show a shot. I haven’t seen the promos for it, though.
Ditto.
I’m just too lazy to type. Except for the backspacing I had to do to fix the “d” that I didn’t capitalize and the subsequent edit I had to do because I didn’t quite like the way another word looked and changed it. Other than that, I totally agree with Dung Beetle, but couldn’t actually be bothered to take the effort to type out what I was really thinking inside. But then again, “pretty funny” is kind of weak and non-commital. I actually thought he was “pretty damn funny” and found his special on Comedy Central very entertaining. The “place where my jokes come from” and the “art-board” segments really were clever and well timed, come to think of it. And I would probably hit his mom, too, if you know what I mean. Kinda big in the can, but totally MILFish in a cute, older broad sort of way. Grandma, no way.
But other than that, I couldn’t have said it better and am far too entrenched in a psycho-physical ennui to even attempt such a feat.
I watched an hour-long special he did that was aired on the BBC, called “If”, and this is exactly the impression I had of him. He annoyed the crap out of me. It was an hour of “Wow, aren’t I a brilliantly quirky hipster??” Maybe he’s gotten better since then, but I’m not really interested in finding out.
ETA: Oh, and I quite like xkcd
Never heard of him until yesterday when Terry Gross interveiwed him. Did some funny stuff, if I had cable I’d check his show out.
Because I have 3 of my own!
Like whoever upthread said, the diving joke is just stupid. Demitri (Dimitri?) irritates me, but I’ll go watch the link upthread to reevaluate.
Also, anyone playing the harmonic these days is annoying, not cool, cute, funny or hip. Please make a note of it.
I picture you shaking a cane as you say this…
The commercial with the bit about the “power of lines” and his example with a coffee cup sold the show to me.
I really liked him when I first discovered his Comedy Central special, but the more I listen to him the more I get the feeling his humor comes from a dark vindictive place, like Sarah Silverman or David Cross.
I think I’ll pass.
And the poster board schtick and songs about his mom are really tiresome.
I’d watch the stand-up special again if I ran across it, but I saw a little bit of the show the other night, and it sucked eggs.
I was going to mention the same; I ran across something about his age yesterday and was suprised to see he was almost my age. We watched the show last night and my wife could barely believe it when I told her. He’s very babyfaced.
Did anyone see his faux-commerical on rat extermination last night? That took some balls.
