SNL 1/31/09 Steve Martin

I can’t believe no one made a post about SNL for Saturday. Soo…what did everyone think of Steve Martin’s appearance?

First of all I have to say that I have liked Steve Martin since the 70’s and have liked many of his movies. I don’t see him around much nowadays.

I watched about 15 minutes total of the first 45 minutes of SNL. Steve Martin’s humor has not aged well. His delivery is a bit dated and corny and his jokes were corny. I defintely groaned a few times.

I thought the funniest thing was that the “MacGruber” things were not really part of the show, but paid Pepsi ads.

Oh, and Fred Armisen’s David Patterson impression.

Pepsi pepsi pepsi pepsi! Pepsi.

Anyone remember any other instance of an SNL sketch turning into an actual commercial…I can’t remember SNL doing something like this before?

Liked the Obama/Biden cold open, I think there’s lot of room to continue having Biden playing “Vice President Did He Say That?” in the future and Chewable Pampers was good. Most of the rest of the show except for Update was meh to yawn. Nice to see that the criticism they got about making fun of Gov. Patterson last time didn’t stop them from doing it again.

But the banjo bit at the end was fun and surprising I have to admit even if it sounded more like a Prairie Home Companion bit than a SNL bit.

“No Coke. Pepsi.”

Ahh, things were different back then.

I only caught the banjo bit, but I liked it a lot!

I basically like Martin, but I think he needs to go away. I lost significant respect for him as a comic, and a man who has any judgement at all after the first Pink Panther fiasco. It was painful. I kinda assumed, or hoped, he realized he made a mistake and that would be the end of it. But now he’s gone and made another one! What an idiot. I like him better when he was a jerk.

As far as the show itself, it’s gone down hill. The guy who plays McGruber is the exact opposite of funny, no matter what he does. He’s to laughter like kryptonite is to Superman. The guy who plays Biden is a good sketch comic, as is Armistead. But the show sucks these days and I find myself invariably not being able to sit through the whole thing. I usually check out within the first half hour, if I watch it at all.

It was a blatant commercial for his movie. I resent having that sort of thing shoved down my throat, and wouldn’t go see it now if Martin personally bought me a ticket. Still haven’t seen the first one, either.

The MacGruber skits weren’t very funny, but they DID make me laugh at the first one when I realized, “Oh my god–that’s Jack O’Neill–I mean, the real MacGyver!” aka Richard Dean Anderson.

I am a huge fan of Steve Martin’s early movies. The Jerk is my all-time favorite comedy, and many of his others rank high on my list. But last night’s SNL was just awful.

Remember … it’s Pepsuber!

He and his friends sure do have a talent for getting locked in various control rooms.

I thought the musical guest, Jason Mraz, was fantastic. I also thought most of the skit before Weekend Update were decent to good with one stinker in the mix. Then it went very bad.

Fred Armisen as the Governor of New York is an absolute scream.

I thought the song about being late for school seemed really out of place and lasted waaaay too long. I don’t want to hear a grown man sing about being a schoolboy, thanks.

Watched about a half hour. Martin’s monologue was funny enough, and the “Edible Pampers” ad managed to be funny despite its grossness.

The skit about the three in the bar, however, was just plain pathetic. It started OK, but the ecstasy jokes were just a waste of time.

I had no idea those were paid ads.

I saw it up to Weekend Update and it had its moments.

I think Lizard Cats, I mean Laser Cats is one of the funniest things they do. It’s so lame and they don’t overdo it.

I think Kenan Thompson’s sketch was weak. Mostly, I’m bored with seeing his sketches. I can take him in an ensemble, but when he’s the main character, he’s playing a lame Kenan THomspon with a wig and funny voice.

I’m tired of seeing Seth Myers as well.

The last couple of appearances by Steve Martin that I’ve seen really seemed like he was bored and just phoning it in.

In this one, he was firing on all cylinders! I totally loved his banjo song. His cosmetics salesman one was sad & funny both. (“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone about this.” “Ohhh, I think I’m going to.”) He and the two nasal dorks with the ecstasy was hilarious and I HATE those two characters!

Weekend Update- Who did Angelina Jolie? She was a dead ringer! (“Do you think she wants all those babies?.. Where’s Amy?..”) The PETA Ad- Hefner’s girls jokes was hysterically cruel, and speaking of cruelty, there was Gov. Patterson again! Now, THAT was the old SNL spirit- get roundly criticized for bad taste and so DO IT AGAIN!

And I even liked Lazer Cats, which I usually disdain.

Love the New Jersey jokes!
More Paterson!

Kristin Wiig has got to go. Every “new” Kristin Wiig character is Kristin + funny voice + funny hair. None of them have any point whatsoever. At first it was funny: Target lady, for example, had funny things happen to her, and we got little glimpses of her sad outside-of-Target life with her caaaaandles. Now it’s the weirdo who thinks balloons are birds? What? Why?

This show was a stinker. Sexist joke from Seth in the update. That ridiculous McGruber stuff (which turned out to be a Pepsi Super Bowl ad setup). The pathetic orgy joke with Steve Martin and the women in the cast, just no.

I miss Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and when Darrell Hammond was more than a token.

Token old guy? Token funny guy? Token artifact from the 90s?

I rather like Kenan Thompson. He’s blossomed. And I noticed the White House the other day mentioned some problem and what they have to do is “Fix it!” and I thought of him.

For me, the best part of the show was the look back at “The Gun”.
