If the new Senate majority scraps the filibuster rule entirely, I will rejoice. But so long as it is there, there is no reason for the minority party to unilaterally disarm.
The DHS is nothing more than central management for several agencies that already existed before 9/11, under different departments. Its creation was only a reorganization. That does not mean it is not dangerous, but we must keep it in its proper perspective.
[shrug] It’s happened to all of us. If you want a thread to stay in GD, you need to craft the OP better.
Your first is an attempt by a poster to keep the discussion on topic. It may be junior modding, it may not be; it is not official. You can always report the post, and let the mods handle it.
Your second is Cecil’s right hand when it comes to the Straight Dope columns, and in that case Una is speaking for the Straight Dope. Not, mind you, the Straight Dope Message Board.
[shrug] Take it to ATMB.
Yes, that makes sense. Thank you.
I agree. It’s perfectly appropriate to feel a rule is unwise, but use it to full advantage as long as it exists.
50 years? Dunno. Reminded of something Michael Caine said a while back, that he had to stop calling himself “middle aged” since he didn’t actually know anybody who was 120 years old…
Democrats don’t obstruct. All fault lies in the GOP to try and tie Obama’s immigration plan to the DHS.
The GOP should drop their opposition to Obama’s plan. It is a good, moral plan that will make the country stronger. Why do the GOP hate America that much that they’d purposefully weaken it by playing politics?
Yes, they do. Look, a President, any President, doesn’t get to enact his personal agenda by fiat. It takes agreement from both parts of Congress. The House passed the bill. The Democrat Senators are filibustering, even not letting the bill come up for a vote. That’s obstruction.
Ok, you know what the initials stand for. But it’s clear at this point you don’t understand what it actually means in terms of status or authority on the message board.
Looks to me like a polite request to end a hijack rather than a moderator instruction. That could have come from anyone, not just an SDSAB member. If it had been a moderator instruction, it would have been labeled as such.
As has been pointed out, Una was speaking on behalf of the Straight Dope column, not the Message Board.
It’s only obstructionism if they filibuster Boehner/McConnell’s entire agenda.
D’Anconia, you are not only the most dishonestly disingenuous but the whiniest troll we have seen here in years. As if this bullshit were not enough, you had to take it here.
The key phrase is “something they don’t like.”
I don’t have a problem with either party filibustering the occasional other party’s bill that they detest more than most. That’s just politics. The problem AFAIAC is when one party blocks everything pretty much across the board. That’s obstructionism, obstruction as one’s standard approach.
Well, not always, there are many things a POTUS can do on his own authority without consulting Congress, as you know. That covers most things a POTUS does, actually.
Given that D’Anconia is the name of a minor character from Atlas Shrugged, I think we can blame the ghost of Ayn Rand for this bozo, and not the Holy Ghost.
What about all of the times he’s been overruled by the Supreme Court, 9-0?
If it was given that Obama is in the wrong constitutionally regarding his executive order on immigration, why not fund Homeland Security (ugh, still HATE that name, sounds like the Reichmaster thought it up) and let the Supreme Court rule 9-0 against him?
You really are a simpleton, aren’t you.
