Democratic convention 2008 discussion thread

Oh, btw, I was watching the role call on C-SPAN, and it was so much fun! It was just one big party, with everyone cheering for everyone else. I was kind of sorry that HRC dropped out, because we missed hearing from every state later in the alphabet than New Jersey.

I think that the Bastard strategy is what needs to change, and what people really want to see in changing politics. That’s a big attraction in Obama’s campaign, and Hillary’s. The tenor is that ya don’t have to have a testosterone (the other fossil fuel) Fest to have political force. Why the hell does it have to be Bastard Asshole Force?

If Bill Clinton is a tough “bastard”, he really has had the most amazing way of showing that the past coupla years, by running second to his capable wife. Tough, yep, bastard, no.

JESUS…did Obama just slip Mrs. Biden the tounge?

I’ll see if I can’t find a YouTube.

Regardless of the appropriateness of the comments directed at me, it is true that I voted for George W. Bush in 2000, and it is true that I backed everything that he did until 2004. It is also true that I was so right-wing that had I broken my left leg I would have fallen over until 2004, so I have a lot to live down.

I basically begged for it by maligning Bill Clinton in this thread. This is the DNC thread, after all. If you can’t be partisan here, where can you be?

People have long memories around here, and rightfully so. I was a bit of a right-wing asshole back then. With that in mind, I think a little mercy for the people “sniping” at me is in order. I’m a big boy, I can take it, and in some cases I deserve it. No hard feelings. Much as I might occasionally long for the days of Bill Clinton, I still think he has no place even mentioning family values. I stand by that, and I’ll take the abuse that comes with it. This is the SDMB. Taking a shot at ol’ Slick comes with consequences, and I knew what to expect.

Nice job by John Kerry. Everyone is bringing the goods this week. The party looks stronger than ever.

Obama has to forget the generic-hope-giving-speech tomorrow and instead bring out the authenticity and substance that won him the primary.

God knows he and his staff have been sweating over this speech for weeks. I can’t wait to hear it.

I for one have the memory of a goldfish, but I’d like to see more contrary opinions in this thread, not fewer, as long as they’re expressed civilly. It’s a little echo-chambery in here.

Michelle?

Hot.

Occasional sniping is fine, Doors, (and I’d like to see a genuine debate, here, eventually), but persistent and repetitious sniping on trivial points is liable to get out of control. I appreciate your gracious response, but I still want to see fewer personal comments.

Maybe he did.

Twitter is aflame .

You know, if this were really true, we’d have a shorter, blonder nominee right now.

Bill’s very good indeed, but Barack’s even better.

So far this week, there have been John McCain on the Tonight Show, Mitt Romney interviewed during the convention coverage on CBS, Mike Huckabee on the Colbert Report, and Rudy Giuliani on NPR this morning.

I wonder how many democrats the liberal media will interview during the Republican convention.

Well, the media is driven by the almighty dollar bill and ratings…the dems have a bit of an edge over the pubbies in rating this year…so I think you will see lot’s of dem coverage, be looking for Biden to be interviewed when McCain announces his pick, and look for Biden to be on the attack for whomever McCain chooses.

My wife said that right away last night. I said, “No, of course not.”

Apparently, I wasn’t watching very closely.

I got Rasmussen polled last night. It was automated, so that makes me wonder how accurate they are. I did what I could to move the needle towards Obama.

Well done, soldier!

Can you give us an overview of the questions? Was it just ‘who are you planning to vote for?’ or was there anything about the convention or particular issues?

At first they asked demographic questions like “Are you married?” “How old are you?” etc. They’d ask you to press numbers to answer “yes” or “no,” or for categories of income and the like. Then they asked for party affiliation (If you are a Democrat, press 1…"). Then they asked, “If the election were held today, would you vote for Barack Obama or John McCain. Press 1 for Barack Obama. Press 2 for John McCain. Press 3 for undecided.”

There were some other questions, like “do you think the country is going in a good direction or a bad direction?” and that was about it. There was nothing specific about the convention.

I guess the automated nature might make people more honest in some ways, but I really have to wonder how accurate the demo harvest really is.

Why would you wonder? Or, rather, are you thinking the automated calls result in less accurate deomographic results than live calls would (in which case, why?); or are you thinking that polls in general, whatever the methodology, result in questionably accurate deomgraphics?

So, on Tuesday at 8 Am in the middle of the Republican National Convention hurricane Gustav is expected to hit New Orleans. It’s as if theres a cosmic message here.
