Michelle Obama was masterful. Somehow, Barack managed to top even her!
But this was only the second day. I can imagine a few great things lined up for the final day on Thursday, including Harris’s acceptance speech which I’m sure will be terrific, but how can they keep up this incredible energy tomorrow?
Am I the only one who thought Barack looked much older than most of us remember him? Michelle looked like always, but Barack almost looked gaunt, as if he had lost weight. Still bubbling with all his old rhetorical energy, though!
Do you remember his speech to the Canadian Parliament sometime in 2015 or 2016? He joked about how being President turned his hair grey. “Or as Michelle calls it, the Great White North.”
Yes, he did look a little more gaunt, and he is older now. But he sure had his speechifying energy, and that’s what matters.
She was great and a perfect lead in to her husband.
Her comments about failing forward and being able to go bankrupt multiple times and an using an escalator to climb obstacles and relying on generational wealth were fantastic (describing Trump’s success).
I’ll just add that, since I was watching the free live feed on CNN on my computer, which CNN always does for major events, I went over to the Fox website to see if they were doing the same. Yes, they had a live feed of the DNC, but you couldn’t see it unless you authenticated yourself via a cable provider or it appeared that you could possibly access it if you set up an account on Fox News itself. But it wasn’t immediately accessible the way it was on CNN. I’ll be charitable and just attribute this to Fox being mercenary rather than trying to minimize the number of viewers of the DNC.
Do you know if they did the same for some of the other speeches, particularly Michelle Obama? They were all great, but Michelle had some great zingers for Trump!
Well, today’s “major policy speech” from Trump was literally held in a parking garage, where he predictably stayed on topic for all of about 30 seconds before trailing off into the Airing of Grievances, and Fox News cut away from him as soon as he started spouting election lies.
Then he spent the evening on Truth Social posting over 70 posts bragging about the people he’d endorsed who won primaries, even though many of them ran unopposed and in several others he endorsed both candidates.
I don’t know if this is going to show up here, but here’s a gif of Obama’s beautiful hand motion when talking about Trump’s obsession with crowd sizes.
ETA: It’s the glance down between his hands that kills me!
They showed Walz and both Obamas. The panel afterward tried hard to be snarky but found it a bit difficult. One woman did try a weird spin where she said all the speakers kept talking about how things aren’t great and people need help and isn’t that exactly what Trump is saying. She also said that the RNC convention had shown that they had empathy and integrity, too. I turned it off at that point.
I still think the Dems have to praise and point out Kamala’s accomplishments as a VP a little bit more.
We’re gonna hear about her plan more when she speaks Thursday, so maybe the campaign is not trying to give any gish gallop to Fox News and the like.
It would help swing voters (IMO) and fence sitters to support H/W. And if they previously supported Orangeboy, maybe graphs and pictures will make it easier for them.
God, yes. Mrs. C and I were in tears during Michelle’s speech, and then seeing and hearing Barack again was so wonderful. He was by far the greatest President of my lifetime so far. (I was born during the Truman administration.) Damn we miss him.
Actually that was “Trump’s weird obsession with crowd sizes”. Which scored a beautiful triple hit:
It referenced Walz’s great “weird” attack meme against Trump and Vance
It mocked Trump’s narcissistic obsession and lies about the size of his crowds
It mocked Trump’s ridiculous invisible concertina which is finally getting well-deserved mockery – he always starts playing the invisible concertina when he gets agitated while speaking.
A professional comedian couldn’t have done it better than Obama! This is what I meant when I said that the wit that Team Harris has been directing against Trump and Vance reminds me of Obama. Man, I love that guy! I’m glad Fox News carried that speech in full – it means Trump and his handlers are guaranteed to have seen it. Let’s see if Trump rages about it and tries to modify his behaviour.
My thoughts:
I missed some of the early speeches.
Always love the roll call of states.
I’m too old to recognize a lot of the songs but even I know Lil Jon.
Northern Marianas always have the best hats (cheeseheads are runners up)
The more blue the state the more “present” votes. Red states all voted 100% Harris.
Lots of governors and senators there.
Loved Wyoming with the delegates who were 18 and 83.
I can’t remember who made the point (maybe Pritzker) but that the Democratic Party is for everyone including straight white males.
Speaking of Pritzker, I didn’t think he would troll Trump about being a “real billionaire”.( I just remember going to religious school with him for a year when I was about ten and my mother trying to get me to befriend him so I could one day marry him. That and him singing “If I were a rich man “ in some talent competition).
Emhoff was great. I’ve heard him tell the voice mail story before on Colbert. He really does love Kamala and his kids clearly do also. Love how much his family has embraced Harris. This is my favorite story about the first time she met Emhoff’s mother . kamala harris mother in law - Google Search
Both Obamas killed it. Not much else to add.
ETA: I knew I’d forget something. I was feeling a little down that Harris wasn’t there to formally accept the nomination. They actually had stellar timing in the cut to Milwaukee for her to make her brief remarks. I thought it was expertly done. Show that she isn’t sitting around looking uncomfortable at the roll call but instead out campaigning but let her at least briefly acknowledge the delegates.
