Democratic National Convention August 19-22 2024

Reminding people of his own mixed background as a Black man, along the way of making other points, is very savvy in the context of Harris and identity. Subtle and strong.

Obama is such a great speaker. Such a statesman. I had forgotten how powerful and erudite he can be in his speeches. Trump is such a clown in comparison. I would even say an embarrassment.

Such a class act.

Can I vote for him again?

The Obamas are so elegant.

There’s always Michelle. (I know she has said that will never happen but one can dream.)

About 35 or 36 minutes. And every second was gripping. Talk about a gifted orator.

How anyone can prefer the trump message over this is a complete mystery.

It seems appropriate that I got the call today to go work Elections in my county.

Looks like I’ll be getting to work.

A blue or red county?

Put another way, something to look forward to or not?

I’ve actually used that line myself.

If they refuse to listen to what is being said then the mystery is solved.

Very blue. It will be fine. We’re a vote-by-mail state, so I probably won’t be interacting with the public.

I feel quite inspired after just 2 days after this convention!

That was absolutely a masterpiece. I miss hearing politicians who actually understand what the words “oratory” and “rhetoric” mean.

I didn’t specifically mean the speech. The two cultures are antithetical to each other, and I don’t see how the other culture is appealing at all.

I don’t know, but it seems to me that Trump’s message concentrates on making people fearful. Fear brown people, fear Islam, fear being overrun by illegals, and so on.

What I’ve heard over the last two nights is not making people fearful. It’s making them hopeful. It’s family, however you want to define it. It’s the middle class as the backbone of the United States, and most definitely not billionaires, and since the middle class makes up the majority of Americans, it resonates with them. In a good way.

This seems to me to be the message that is going to get through to Joe and Jane Average American: if we work together as Americans, we don’t need to fear anything. We can do it (thanks, Obama), and Harris/Walz is going to help us get to where we want to be, without fearing anything. Have hope, Americans, not fear—that’s my takeway from the last two nights.

Is anybody ever going to parody Trump’s famous speech about immigration? I keep waiting and it keeps not happening. You know:

When Republicans sends its candidates, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with them. They’re bringing speed and xanax. They’re bringing felony indictments and convictions. They’re adjudicated rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

It would be so easy.

IMO, it’s amplifying, and exploiting, the sometimes-subconsicous fears that some people already have.

He even made a classy dick joke which is difficult to do. (His gesture that accompanied the line about Trump’s fixation on crowd size)

Here’s the recap of my occasional Fox News check-ins.

Did you know that Democrats are quaking in fear at the thought that RFK might drop out and endorse Trump? This is going to be the big break for the Trump campaign and all Trump will have to do is give RFK a seat on his cabinet, probably Secretary of Health and Human Sevices.

The Fox News shill seemed to be having some difficulty keeping a straight face during that last part, but he was trying his best.

Next sampling came during Hannity. They were mostly covering a medium sized group of peaceful protesters, trying to make like they they were going to erupt into violence at any minute……but to me it looked like they were mostly standing around filming with their phones, although some of them were walking around playing drums.

Apparently the only reason that Kamala is having a rally in Wisconsin - or having rallies at all - is to troll Trump. She just wants to rub it in his face that she can draw bigger crowds, because she’s mean and nasty. They can’t think of any other conceivable reason why she would have rallies - none at all.

Then Ted Cruz came in and they talked about the convention itself - while neglecting to show any footage of the convention itself. They did describe it as dark and hate filled, evil Marxists planning to destroy everything that is good about America.

Then Ted’s true motives were revealed - the evil Democrat carpetbaggers have been throwing money into Texas trying to unseat him, and he needs money to fight them, please please please send me money now. Go to my website and give me money.

This leave me wondering if Fox News prime time has devolved into a telethon.

Then the biggest surprise of the evening- I turned the channel for my 11PM check in and they ran Obama’s entire speech without cutting away or giving any commentary - they didn’t even run any snarky subtitles. I actually forgot I was watching on Fox. And after the speech they had two of their more normal hosts give about 5 minutes of commentary that was fairly normal and mostly complimentary, though not effusive.

Then they threw it to a larger panel and it started to devolve and I changed the channel, having actually watched Fox for 45 minutes straight without my blood pressure rising. I bet their regular viewers are PISSED, and that makes me smile.
