Democratic National Convention August 19-22 2024

40 minutes (give or take and depending on when you count the start and end)

Aw, one of the wee girls has a balloon that is bigger than her.

I’ve been musing on an idea similar to this for a few days and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. 30 years ago the Republicans were seen as the party of family values and the working class and Flyover Country and government not sticking its nose in your business, and somehow the Democrats are now all of those things without having really changed what they stand for at all.

I think we’re seeing the beginning of the Seventh Party System.

Listening to it on a delay. Just got to the end of kamala’s speech. That was freaking amazing. Looking forward to analysis.

Well, how about that, that was the entertainment surprise! Though not sure if the “teasing” was anything other than the social media rumour mill…

Actually, Kamala’s speech was the good and proper highlight of the evening. Could not have asked for a better endorsement than the bona fides of the candidate herself.

Well, I think it’s worth noting that there was no talk of revenge, or of being a dictator on Day 1. She did take shots at Trump, but in the context of whatever policy she was discussing. That ought to provide an interesting starting point in the analysis.

“One nation that embraces us all” – if we win this election, I am sure gonna feel embraced.

And I think we’re going to win it.

– they can’t very well turn the lights off, can they? All those people have to see to get out of there. (So they can go home and vote.)

I’m imagining that the janitorial crew at the United Center are saying to themselves, “Well, looks like I’m putting in for overtime tonight.”

I just had this thought go through my head.

Hey Donald? That little chill you just felt go down your spine. That’s very real. You should pay attention to that.

Also said by the janitorial crew at Mar-a-Lago.

Imagine being the guy with the balloon popper job.

And the confetti sweeper.

“Hey, Jerry? You wanna get that special Ketchup-B-Gon cleanser?”

Seriously, I read somewhere that Trump would be doing a “play-by-play” on Truth Social, regarding the DNC tonight. Does anybody know what he said there?

Ah, CNN just reported the time check: 37 minutes.

CNN said he posted 40 times. One, a harsh criticism that Coach Walz was not a coach because he was an assistant coach

Please, let’s not turn this thread into yet another discussion of Trump. Link to here, but make your posts in a Trump thread. Thanks.

I was impressed at how authentic Harris sounded. From start to finish, she didn’t sound at all “fake” or over-produced to me. Just someone telling us their story, and then about what’s important to them and why, and why it should be important to me, too. Real.

(I don’t recall her coming across as so natural during the 2020 primaries. That she can grow learn an important skill in her late fifties is itself a great trait!)

I thought the Harris speech was solid. Covered her background and values well. Made it clear what she would support, including complex foreign policy issues, and contrasted this effectively with Trump and Project 2025. Stuck to the script, repeated themes well, was passionate and persuasive, and easily won over the crowd.

No moments of high humour. No cheap shots. Emphasized the importance of the election for democracy without making Trump seem omnipotent or trivializing things. Hit upon the things that niche groups like and vote for: more housing, social safety nets, strong borders wth a path to citizenship, international institutions, dealing with dictators, middle class tax breaks, supporting small businesses and workers. Did not dodge difficult things like Gaza but rather threaded the needle expertly, surprisingly clearly, and with compassion.

Harris is a dramatically better speaker than even five years ago. She is not yet as good as the Obamas but has more potential. An excellent speech with no unforced errors but not a speech for the history books, unlike her candidacy. But an impressive effort, and far better than Trump or Biden IMHO.

Welcome to the SDMB, Mr. Trump! Hope you enjoy!

ETA: Bah, leaving it for posterity, already. :stuck_out_tongue:

CNN is commenting on the surprise no-surprise. Seems that organizers wanted the takeaway to be about Harris, and not a “special surprise guest.” I think the strategy worked; neither Beyonce or Swift or anybody else, took the energy away before or after Harris. And that energy was better spent on Harris, I think.

May you get everything you deserve, including my atrocious autocorrect. Damn straight, the squishee contains potassium benzoate.

@Spoons I agree. The highlight of the night was Harris, and her clarity, authenticity, and credibility, like @JKellyMap said above.

For all the pageantry of the convention, this was not the night to dilute it with celebrity.
