You know the really sad thing? I don’t think that many people care about New Orleans anymore. It’s not something I hear people talking about at all anymore. Sad, but true.
What about Jackson, or any of the other cities like Gulf Port that have tons of casinos? Jackson, FWIW, has about the same size population as Denver, so the cities are relatively close in size.
Lamar, exactly why the convention should have been in New Orleans. Because people have forgotten. New Orleans was a lovely city, warts and all, to leave it in the state that it’s presently in is reprehensible, IMHO.
True, but that isn’t what a convention is for.
Denver is five times bigger than Jackson, MS. I don’t know where you are getting your figures from. Plus, it has an arena that can handle a huge crowd and enough hotel rooms to put up all the people.
(Everything that follows is just my opinion.) I think New Orleans is a bad idea conceptually for the Democrats. I think too many people wouldn’t like revisiting the Katrina fiasco, and the Democrats might end up associating it with themselves, rather than the Republicans.
Also, too many horror stories coming out as peripheral to the convention. Homeless old ladies being pushed aside to make room for VIP parking. The images of drunken partying and bellicose speech-making while a city rots and stinks. Attendant crime that goes with any such event and would only exasperate NO’s problems.
Gotta say, too much PR risk.
According to the Jackson, MS website, Jackson has a population of 425K, which last time I checked was about the same as Denver (which is also the size of Nashville, TN).
But that’s Jackson’s metro pop. Denver’s metro pop is almost 2-1/2 million.
Ah. Well, look at the advantages of holding it in Jackson over Denver, then. As a smaller city, it’ll offer a more “intimate” feel, warm, southern hospitality, attracting attention in the part of the country which was critical for clinton to win the White House. Not to mention being forced to sleep in your car because there’s no hotel rooms available will enable to you have some idea of what it’s like to be homeless!
The GOP’s choice of Minneapolis, the heart of Humphrey-Mondale-Wellstone-DFL country, is better how?
 It doesn’t take a genius to know there’d likely be pre-planned mass demonstrations and possibly riots, so I find it hard to believe you’re serious.
I don’t know about booking conventions, but I’m pretty sure there are significant costs both in money and good will involved in that scenario, and the Dem leadership, being, unlike you, LEADERS, know that quite well. You don’t just reschedule an event as big as that for the next week. And what if NOLA doesn’t get whacked? Do you expect the other city to just pull people off the street to fill hotel rooms?
That darn soulless capitalism, showing up in the oddest places. A real kill-joy.
Consider the Democratic Party a big-busted tranny with loose morals.
Denver is gonna rock her panties.
Gee, you don’t think that’s a possibility any where the Republicans pick to hold their convention? IIRC, they had NYC locked down pretty tight in '04 because of fears of “terrorism.”
I realize that this might come as a shock to you, but not every week in every city capable of holding a major convention is booked solid throughout the year. Not to mention the “backup” city will get a boost anyway, since the “B” teams would be there, setting things up “just in case.” So it’s not like they’d be SOL.
Funny, that. Pro-government people always cite that the advantage of government over business that it doesn’t have to show a profit. While pro-business folks cite needing to make a profit as why businesses can be more efficient than govenment. They say that proof you’ve come up with a successful compromise is that no one’s happy.
“Yee-haw! I’m a Democratic delegate this year, and we’re going to…Jackson, Mississippi? Fergit it, Reba. I’m votin’ Republican!”
Jackson can handle it now. Tunica, too. Pre-Katrina, the Mississippi Coast could have done it. Don’t really see a major party convention in a casino, though.
New Orleans could have done it. They hosted the Sugar Bowl this year. There’s enough hotel rooms within driving distance to handle pretty much any event.
Well, color me impressed. I would not have expected cities of that size to be able to host such a huge convention.
Are you serious? 35,000 people come to this thing. Does Jackson (or Tunica  ) have an arena that seats 20,000+, pre-wired for dozens of TV networks to cover plus room for their satellite trucks outside? Are there even enough hotels in the city to hold all those people? The DNC has insisted that there be 18,000 hotel rooms available for that week. The attendees are Senators and Presidential candidates and TV news anchors - the Best Western isn’t going to cut it. What about police for security?
New Orleans may have enough hotels within driving distance, but people don’t drive to this thing. In Denver you can walk to the arena from the downtown hotels. You can’t drive 20,000 people into and out of the Superdome every morning and evening.
I don’t think people realize just how big an undertaking something like this is.
Here is my thread about convention locations from a couple years ago.
Oh come on. You’re missing the big picture. Political conventions=politicians. Politicians=equal long, blustery speeches. Long, blustery speeches+thin air= a fainting good time.
Bill Richardson: And wheeze that is why puff-puff the Re-GASP-pub- THUD!!
Whoa! Forget cacuses and primaries. They could hold the nomination process Survivor style.
Jeff Probst: Democratic party bid–up for grabs. Candiadates, ready? Go!
No, let’s have Hillary’s triumphant renomination for a second term in rebuilt New Orleans in 2012.
Sure you can. The one thing that went right during the whole Katrina disaster was the evacuation of the city. It was the largest evacuation in US (if not human) history. If they can manage to pull that off, they can figure out how to get convention folks to and from the Superdome.
I do. Nashvegas holds a number of large conventions each year, as well as major sporting events, and I’ve been here since before they started doing most of that. They really didn’t have to do too many upgrades to the city as far as highways and the like. Yeah, there’s days when the traffic’s intolerable because of them, but what can you do? (I know there’s lots of things you can do, if you’re the highway department, but if you’re not. . .)
Oh, and security can be handled by outside police officers brought in special for the event. Cities do it all the time for big events.
18k hotel rooms?
Holy overbooking, Batman. Tunica, from what I found with a quick google, only has about 6k. Guess that one might have been a stretch. :o
