That is exactly what I have been saying, with the proviso that “fighting the nomination” means vigorous debate and a “no” vote, but not obstructionist tactics. The key is to have it a done deal some weeks before the election, so marginal Reps have time to lapse into complacency.
I realize I have been admonished earlier to not worry about marginal voters (marginal in both senses, i.e. ideological purity and likeliness to vote) in a mid-term election, but IMO they are the ones who will decide the election.
On both points I have a slightly different understanding of what you’re saying now than originally, actually I think it is a bit different if you or anyone else cares to reread your OP and compare it to this latest one. No problem though if you’ve changed your thinking a bit. But, I see a distinction between ‘get this confirmation vote over as far before the election as possible’ and ‘don’t drag it out with stupid delaying tactics’. The one implies just shutting up and letting the GOP get it going on as accelerated a basis as possible, the other while not defined suggests unprecedented kinds of obstructionism.
Again I think the missing piece is who the Democratic base is angry at. The problem with ‘get it over as soon as possible’ is the anger it would generate at elected Democrats. I’m not saying that’s logical necessarily, but logic plays a limited role in base politics in both parties AFAIK.
Again here I’m not sure the description of ‘stupid delaying tactics’, and again I’d compare it to the original formula ‘get this over as far before the election as possible’. Again not that I’m sniping at you for being ‘inconsistent’, it’s just actually confusing.
I think the Democrats will go with the ‘by the book solution’ here which is to make lots of noise, lots of arguably exaggerated claims against Kavanaugh, demand much lengthier than usual reviews of documents etc. But not break new ground in obstructionism. The Republicans will ignore it, conduct the confirmation at more or less average pace, confirm with 50+VP or 51 votes (if McCain either makes an extraordinary trip or relinquishes the seat by then) some weeks before the election.
Then parts of the Democratic base will be angry at elected Democrats generally because they didn’t stop or further delay (even though they simply couldn’t). And it will be highlighted for GOP voters what is at stake in GOP control (it wasn’t the oldest member who just retired after all) especially those who tolerate GOP excesses (such as Trump) mainly because of USSC considerations. I think that’s a wash for Democrats in general at best, and can’t really be fundamentally improved upon.
But for Democratic Senate prospects it’s a clear negative. Manchin, Heitkamp and Donnelly will infuriate the left base, against themselves and the party to some degree, if they vote yes this time like they did for Gorsuch. But they will energize the right base in their states if they vote no, as will other Trump-won state Democratic Senate candidates even though they more cover in having also voted no for Gorsuch.
Kennedy retiring at this particular time has simply lowered the expected number of Democrats in the Senate in 2019 from what it was before he retired, all else equal, IMO.
Well, the African American community can take note that not only is unemployment at record lows. Trump is bringing many blue color and factory type of jobs back to the USA. These are the types of jobs that do not require a higher education.
In addition, Trump’s impact on illegal immigration ( Down 50% or more ) should help low skill level works find jobs, part time or full.
Putting the scare politics aside, maybe the parts of African American community that is " fighting for their lives " should think twice about who they are voting for. America first means all citizens.
Considering that Trump spent years spreading an evidence free racist conspiracy theory and never apologized, as well as praising white supremacists at Charlottesville, along with other racist statements, I don’t think it’s likely he’ll get much black support.
This is the “he didn’t mean to say it” defense followed immediately by the “he never said it at all” defense, all mashed together. You’re supposed to pull them out one at a time, only moving to the next as they get disproven one-by-one.
LOL. Praising white supremacists is racist; spreading bullshit fact free conspiracy theories about the birth of the first black president, without apologizing, is racist; insisting on the prosecution of several black teenagers even after they were exonerated is racist; saying a judge can’t do his job because he’s “Mexican” is racist; and much more.
I’m sure all the black people in America will be eternally grateful that Trump is providing lots of jobs that don’t require a higher education, only require low skill, and which will probably not even give them enough hours to pay them a living wage. Because that’s all they are good for right?
Making America Great Again. By ensuring black people are in perpetual servitude.
No, I don’t think they will be thinking twice at all. And posts like yours provide a stark reminder of exactly why Trump will not be getting their vote.
Nah, we’re straight, bruh. Ya’ll done enough. White folks have abandoned the tenets truth and science to wander in the dark forests ofwhataboutism and quackery. White folks are lost forever; we’re not coming in after you after more.
So, Willie Nelson is white, and so is Ted Nugent. Really, pretty much the same.
And the Irish, the Russians, and the Jews, peas in a pod. 'Course, Orthodox Russians, Orthodox Jews, maybe. Though I hear that they differ on some key issues. Wouldn’t know, just another peckerwood, dumb as dirt with a mean streak.
The Dems didn’t put up a big fight because they assumed that President Clinton would be able to nominate a more progressive candidate to a D majority senate. Since we all know how well that worked out they have to fight now and not make any predictions about the future.
Only if you take unhinged to be a reliable witness of what actually happened in 2016. Considering that Hillary was chosen by DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY VOTERS, not the DNC…
Tanks for what? Trump is the guy who provided more jobs to the community.
How is this Trump’s issue alone? Nothing can change a person in their 50’s that missed out on higher ed, but a President can change the amount of job openings a group with no higher ed can have. We are seeing that now.
Trump pretty much reversed many XO’s by Obama that helped business. He’s not riding his coattails. Quite the opposite, he’s changing many things. A reason along with tax cuts for record low unemployment! During Obama, the labor rate, which defines the percent of population actually went down! Its back up under Trump.
So are you saying the poor white or latino people, which outnumber the poor black people are getting a pass? If you are able bodied, work hard and play by the rules, you can better yourself and help the next generation. You could say part of the reason for the community not doing as well as they could is based on family issues, and high school drop out percentages.
Well if your so sure, maybe the media they watch can point this out and educate them. Then people can make up their own minds. Why don’t we see much talk there? Hmmmm…
