I know it’s early in the season…and I know he is trying to be somewhat of a self parody…but is anybody else wodering how long the Monday Night Football season will be with him in the booth?
The Hall of Fame game is not even at half time…and he’s already annoying
Personally I’m looking forward to it. I’m going to predict he’ll do a great job. He’s one of more intelligent celebreties out there. Of all the comics working today, he’d be my first pick.
Imagine Jerry Seinfeld… “What is it with those zebra striped shirts the referees wear? Have you ever noticed that? What happened, did the NFL want to make absolutely sure your uniform couldn’t be worn at your other job?..”
Joan Rivers… “Oh! Ach! Ach! Those Jersey’s make their butts look so big!”
Steven Wright… " look at that "
Any of the Wayans brothers… “Wow! Look at that #&**%# Run! He *&^%%4 near fumbled the ()))*&^%'n ball! If I could #$))*~` run like that, I’d be with the &@)@) hottest piece of *&^@&&^?> in town! Shee…”
Nope, I’m giving the guy a shot. He’ll be ok, I think, after he gets the hang of his job.
And, to be honest, I haven’t EVER heard an announcer worse than that nimrod who did commentary for women’s gymnastics at the Olympics last time around…what was that idjit’s name?
No, never mind - don’t post his name. It makes me shudder with horror.
I thought he did relatively well. In fact, if people would stop focusing on the fact that he is, in fact, Dennis Miller, I would wager that they would find him to be witty, quick with the anecdote, and a valuable asset to the team.
I thought Miller did a fine job, considering most of those football announcers (esp. Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf) as about as interesting as drying paint.
Besides, his early-game crack about “How can you have a minor groin operation?” had my whole office laughing.
I will quote the man “I have no idea what that means!” In reference to an extra man on the field for the 49ers and a man going out of bounds and not coming in for the patriots. I think he was trying to be funny, but I don’t know. At any rate, I found a lot of what he said to be funny b/c it showed he did not know what he was talking about and/or it was just irrelevant . . .
For example, he made a comment about the Pats’ first-string running back and how he was going to have a big game . . . friends, we do not play first-string running backs in the first preseason game.
He also said something about some dude on the Pats (Strongwait or something) not having a mug at some store . . . I’m probably biased against him b/c he isn’t known for having a lot to do with football, as he showed tonight.
He was better than Boomer, Dan Dorkdorf, and Frank Gifford put together.
Besides, he was genuinely entertaining. I didn’t know how I would feel about him until I watched the show, so I was pleasantly suprised.
Anyway, what kind of expert was Howard Cossell on football when he started MNF? IIRC, he made his career on boxing. Dennis Miller knew plenty, and he’ll learn even more.
He was obviously nervous, obviously inexperienced, and obviously having a great time. The last fact is the most important. He seemed to know his place, and that he’s there to be a fan and keep the slow points entertaining. Unlike many announcers who think they supercede the game itself, Dennis was a fan with the best job in the world. I like that. I’m sure he’ll get better, smoother and more comfortable. I’m sure Fouts and Al will learn to take the reigns on the technical stuff, and Miller will get confident enough to lay some good rips on those two for a good time. Basically it was a preseason game for everyone, players, coaches, refs and announcers. Give it time, I think it’ll go nicely. Anything’s a step up from Dildorf. Dickerson however looks like he’s in for a rough year if he doesn’t loosen up.
PS. Mellisa Stark is still drop dead gorgeous and she knows her football, I think I’m in love!
Well, he was obviously out of his element and nervous as a dog shitting peach pits, but I’m still giving him the benefit of the doubt. It is still preseason.
I like the fact that he acknowledged both facts, too.
Moleman, I totally agree with the Dickerson comment. If I were a gambling man, no wait, er… if anyone wants to bet I’ll give odds on Miller being around longer than Dickerson.
And how about Melissa Stark? Man, she’s not too hard on the eyes, huh? I was never much of a Lesley Visser fan anyway.
Dan Fouts was pretty good too. I don’t think he’ll be a superstar, but he’s a solid announcer with good commentary.
Mr. Cynical, no offense, but I thought the Cantonese reference was way lame on the Dennis Miller scale. SuperNelson, I’ll have to agree with the HindenBud as his best one-liner.
Give him time, though. He’s got to make his rookie mistakes like everyone else.
