I’m not sure. I think it is most likely because the brackets can cut your tounge. Perhaps it is because it would be hard to wear a retainer or other orthodontal device when the brackets are on the back of the teeth.
When I had braces about 5 or 6 years ago, getting braces on the backs of your teeth was an option. However–
I was an orthodontist’s assistant for a few years and we did have one adult patient who insisted on having these. The above reasoning is correct: difficult to keep clean, tear up your tongue, not suitable for many types of malocclusion (bite problems), etc.
The reason it costs so much and is seldom offered is that they’re nearly impossible to install and work on. The orthodontist has to nearly stand on his head the whole time and everything has to be done upside down and backwards from the way he’s used to doing it.
Also, as a result of the reduced tension, it takes longer for them to work. Right now, I would guess that the better option would be to get those Invisalign clear braces if you don’t want people to see them.
