InvisAlign Orthodontics - does it work?

Anyone out there try it / know someone who has?

www.invisalign.com

I was thinking about getting it - seemed more convienent and professional to getting the full braces (I’m 30 and a face to face rep for an IT company…I come in with braces and I would think that my credibility goes down a notch or two)

Just looking for some personal experiences / info / concerns - thanks!

So, how’s your bite? Is it better than your bark?

I see a big downside–if you have to get new “trays” every two weeks, those office visits can run into money.

Oh, and removable braces take even longer than permanent ones.

So that’s even more office visits.

Well I used to be friends with this dentist and I asked her about it once. Basically it works but as best as she could remember it was something like ten times more expensive than regular braces since only one lab in the US does the work. Not sure if that’s still true.

My wife used Invisalign to straighten her teeth. She wore them for about 11 months, changing aligners every two weeks. The dentist gave her several sets of aligners at once, so she didn’t have to go every two weeks to pick up a new set. I believe she had to go every 6 weeks to have her progress checked. The initial visit involved taking casts of her teeth for the Invisalign computer to scan so it could create the custom aligners.

The cost of the visits is included in the price. The total cost was around $4750. It is very expensive, but the lack of fixed braces outweighed the cost in her mind.

The downsides (besides the price) are the inconvenience of having to remove them before eating or drinking, a bit of pain as you adjust to each new set of aligners, drooling while sleeping, and a noticeable change in your voice due to having these hunks of plastic in the way of your tongue. People sometimes do notice them, mostly when they notice light reflecting from them.

She was very happy with the outcome. She had worn metal braces before and her teeth moved back out of line. It has been a year since she finished using Invisalign and her teeth are still perfect. Her teeth were bad enough that the dentist wasn’t sure that they could create aligners to fix them, but the Invisalign computer found a way. They even created an animation to show how the alignment would work.
