So, if I understand correctly, this proposal will make it illegal for someone to give another party “money” in exchange for “work” on a day to day basis. Are they fucking high? How much more god damn economically efficient can you fucking get?

In this country, I should be able to offer anyone at anytime consideration in exchange for labor of any term, and the party should have the right to accept or reject my offer.
Ya know, if my home town had a law like that when I was growing up, I never could have bought my first car. I did any kind of odd job I could find, mostly yard work, sometimes painting, whatever I could find. Saved for about 3 years, borrowed a bit from my dad, and had the car paid for before my 16th birthday.

For about the millionth time, having a problem with illegal immigration does not make one a bigot, and I’d thank you to stop saying that because that is an extremely disingenuous argument. I wasn’t addressing the specifics of the legislation, which is unenforceable at best and stupid to boot. No, I was addressing the “anti-illegal immigration=racist” argument that is thrown out here like we’re talking about the same thing. It’s an attempt by people to reframe the issue by making it a bigotry problem rather than a law enforcement one.

Last week, one of the programmers here was talking about getting some money on the side by doing little jobs for the kind of small businesses that only need an IT guy a couple hours a week. Weekly backups of the business’ computer, installing the latest version of MSOffice, that kind of thing.
He was happily surprised when I told him that here in Spain it’s legal to hold those jobs without setting yourself up as “self-employed” or paying Social Security, VAT, etc., so long as the total amount of hours you have them is below 20h/wk. The government sees those as “submerged economy but ok”, as opposed to the construction companies that have dozens of people working 60h/wk and pay 20 of those hours under the table. As a Labor Minister once put it “we aren’t hunting for babysitters”.

My problem is this forty tons of gravel that ain’t gonna spread itself. This was kind of supposed to be about politicians and ignorance to the economic law of unintended consequences, not so much immigration. But, such is the pit I suppose.
