When I got home today there were people all over the nieghborhood with picket signs. I live right across the street from a DMV. A civil rights group was picketing the DMV because apparently it is against the law for illegal aliens to have a drivers licence. DUH!

I was of course presented with a flyer goes something like this. All typos and poor grammar are identical to the flyer.

Some of these people never cease to astonish me with their sense of entitlement. Whay just because you made it into the country you are magicly endowed with all of the rights and privledges accorded to citizens? FUCK YOU! I sooooo wanted to go off on these people, but for some reason the 2 cops present seemed inadequate to stop 120 protesters from beating me into bean paste. I would have given my left nut for a border patrol baseball cap, that would have been QUALITY entertainment. I am SOOOOO pissed. I couldn’t get into my driveway due to all of the cars illegally parked all over the place in front of my damn house.

I don’t happen to agree with a lot of US immigration laws, but really doesn’t it say how crappy our set-up is when people who aren’t legally here in our country are being allowed to get a legal document from the government? Its now legal in Tennessee (where I live) for illegal aliens to get a driver’s license. I don’t understand the logic behind it (well I do, but I’ll get to that later), one would think that the state’s task in this instance, would be to report anyone to INS who shows up and says, “Hi, I’m not really supposed to be here in this country.” Apparently, not. The only reason why Tennessee’s doing it (for those of you who find nothing wrong with illegal aliens getting driver’s licenses, ponder this for a moment: By your thinking Tennessee is more progressive than California! :rolleyes: ) is because the state is having a massive financial crisis and the government’s desperately looking for any way to increase its revenue (other than say, making highway workers do their jobs, or running the state in a more efficent manner, but I digress).

Mind you, here’s what they’ve discovered so far:

  1. The DMV is now so clogged with people trying to get a license that its damn near impossible for anyone to do so.

  2. Insurance companies say they have no intention of writing polices for illegals.

  3. Large numbers of illegals getting licenses do not actually live here, and have no intention of doing so.

There ya have it! Bitch about immigration laws, and I’ll bitch right along with you, but bitch about illegals not being able to get a driver’s license, and I gotta say, “You’re nuts!”

I wouldn’t be quite as vehement as you, drachillix, but I have to say, I agree with much of what you say.

There are a lot of hardworking hispanics that live and work in L.A. Southern California will always have a strongly hispanic culture, and that’s fine with me. I grew up with it, it’s part of L.A.

But I cannot advocate having illegal immigrants get driver’s licenses.

I thought about trying to get PD to cite them but I figured if they only put two officers on 100+ protesters chanting and making a big scene at a state agency, I figured they have more pressing issues than me parking in my yard via driving in a neighbors driveway due to inconsiderate assholes.

AND I have a California Driver’s License. I vote. I served on a 3 day jury this month. I pay taxes. Should there be a war in future, I will be expected to possibly donate my son. I was born here in the US, as were my parents, their parents and most of their parents.
They told us in highschool driver’s ed that it was a priviledge, not a right, to drive. I don’t appreciate any illegal alien wanting to grab the goodies without paying. When they have to sit in sub-zero a/c and listen to lawyers drone on and on about exhibit 2B and 2C for days on end, beyond a shadow of a doubt, then let’s see about a CDL.

I’m all for the idea of letting the undocumented take the test for a driver’s license. It’ll cut down on the number of laws they’re breaking. :wink:

Seriously, though, I like “aliens”. Mexican, Chinese, Martian, Reticulan Gray…love ‘em all! I want them to keep coming and get as much as they can. I want them to get drivers’ licenses, union jobs, amnesty, good homes and the right to vote in school board elections. I am just not a nationalist.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of “giving” them things. They do not “take” things, they are some of the hardest-working people in America. They have not hurt you; on the contrary, they enable you to buy affordable food, clothing and child care.

Here’s a consideration: someone with no driver’s license is more likely to flee the scene of an accident. Someone with a valid driver’s license is more likely to stay at the scene and help. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face!

It’s the anti-immigration laws that are senseless and ridiculous. There is no moral principle whatsoever that is safeguarded by these laws. There never has been. For about seventy years, it was illegal for Chinese to immigrate here. I am glad my ancestors sneaked around these laws, because otherwise I wouldn’t be here.

Go back far enough, and everyone’s ancestors were illegal.

Let immigration find its natural level. As long as there’s jobs going begging, people will keep coming. When the jobs dry up, people will stop coming. Simple free-market economics.

Especially when you consider what Tuckerfan posted about the insurance-- i’d say someone with a valid DL and no insurance isn’t too likely to stay and “help.” While I suspect that I don’t agree with the spirit of the OP, I agree with the specific point that drachillix is making: giving out DLs to people that are living in the US illegally is pretty silly.

What do illegal immigrants use for identification in obtaining a driver’s license? If I wanted a fake license I could go to Tennessee, claim to be an illegal immigrant and get another ID, under a false alias, legally?

Don’t they have to take a driver’s ed course before taking the test (they usually cost a couple hundred dollars)?

If you’re in a country illegally, why would you want anyone “official” knowing where/who you are? Wouldn’t that make it easier to be deported? Why isn’t the INS encouraging this and just waiting at the DMV to catch people?

BTW, I am not against legal or illegal immigration. I’m not against people coming here with the intent of becoming good citizens, going through the proper channels, obtaining their citizenship and doing whatever the fuck they want to do after that.

Is it true that you don’t have to be able to speak Rnglish to obtain a U.S. driver’s lisence? I remember a driver being interviewed on TV after an accident, and his TRANSLATOR was speaking for him. I mean, ummm, don’t you have to be able to read STREET SIGNS?

I am all in favor of immigration. Most of us would not be here if it weren’t for immigration. But for gosh sakes, if I were going to move to Sweden or China, I would goddam make it my business to learn Swedish or Chinese!

It’s not a matter of jobs going begging. Do you think that illegal aliens are working on the books? Jobs that would typically go to a legal alien or citizen, for at least a minimum wage salary can be switched to an illegal for shit pay. The more jobs that a business owner can switch from a fully paid worker to a tremendously under-paid illegal will fill up the owner’s pockets more.

I’m an open borders type of guy. But I don’t understand this, either. If insurance companies won’t insure an illegal alien, and California (I’m assuming, but here in Colorado it’s the law) prohibts driving without insurance, than what is the point of a driver’s license? For identification purposes? Couldn’t California issue ident cards for them?

If they can’t drive legally, because they can’t be insured, isn’t that just encouraging them to commit a crime? Something that will definitely get them zealously deported?

I’m a Canadian citizen, been living in the US for a few years on a work visa, currently going through the immigration process. Let me tell you, legal immigration to this country is neither easy, cheap, nor quick.

Actually, it is hard to get a work visa. Even under NAFTA, you have to have a desirable skill listed here, and you have to meet other requirements like already having a job offer from a business in the US. Notice that the requirements for Mexican professionals are more stringent than those for Canadians having the exact same professional skills!. I’m not sure what the requirements are for getting a visa to pick strawberries, but I can’t imagine it’s simply a case of an illegal showing up at an INS office inside the United States and stating a desire to work legally. That would certainly get them a free trip over the border.

Having said all that, I do agree with the spirit of the OP. Giving drivers licences to illegal immigrants is asinine. I just wanted to dispel the idea that getting an immigration or work visa is a trivial task.
