But, Der Trihs doesn’t have a place in the national media, as well he shouldn’t. This is a message board, not the nightly news. I’d be perfectly fine with Coulter posting on the SDMB, but I would not be fine with Der Trihs taking up space in the mainstream media with his “arguments”. It’s two different things, and I would think people could understand that.
I don’t want creationism taught in school, but I’m fine with it being discussed on here. This is a place for extreme opinions. That’s what makes this place fun. We don’t make or influence policy here; it’s all masturbatory (esp. Great Debates). So the biggest wankers have a justification here. IMHO
A serious non-Simpson’s quoting response: Fortitude is no virtue in the service of an unjust cause. Whether it’s a genocide or an unwise bond issue, it’s better that the worst lack all conviction while the best are full of passionate intensity, rather than the other way around.
I would cast my vote in favour of DerTrihs too. His language may be abrasive but it seems that quite often it is an indication of the strength of his convictions and sometimes that style is perhaps required to handle some of the posters here who really need that type of handling.
While I’m annoyed by the fact that he thinks I’m diseased, I admire his passion. If I ever want to spar on religion, faith, agape, etc, I know where to turn. As said before, I kinda like the guy.
But there’s a fine line between passion and obsession…and he’s crossed that line many, many posts ago…almost as if he’s suffering from some sort of disease himself.
Of course you can have fun and honest, intellectual discussion. Nobody denies that.
The problem is that Der Trihs’s input may be “fun” (according to some weird definitions), but it does not foster honest, reasoned discussion. Heck, even the people who side with him on political, moral, and religious issues wish that he’d stop embarassing their side.
“Passion and conviction” is apparently enough for some of you jokers. I’d prefer actual communication over passionate conviction, but that’s just me.
Who the fuck wants to have a discussion with someone who’s passionately convinced, anyway? It’s a waste of time, and contrary to miss elizabeth’s minority opinion, is not fun in any way. At least not after the first 30 times.
That’s why I like him too Say, do you need a ride to the-kill-all-the-abortion-doctors-punish-women-for-having-sex-and-hypocritically-neglect-the-babies meeting? I’m running a little late, but I think I can get us there before the ritual sacrifice and prayer. Don’t tell him where we’re meeting this time, he scares the minister.
That’s something American babykillers would say while they rip out the guts of innocent Iraqi women and children, something idiotic god-botherers would say while they worship their moon fairies and sky pixies, something Repugnicunts would say while they conspire to get minorities out of their party, something capitalist pigs would say while they count their filthy lucre and laugh at homeless people, something dangerous serial murdering Christians would say while they drink blood, something affluent white people would say while they sit in their ivory towers and complain about the poor, something Southerners would say while they drive their pickups around lynching black men for looking at white women, something a Muslim would say while he grovels on the floor mumbling his stupid prayers.

Look, if the whole board was reactionaries it would suck. But it isn’t, and a Der Trihs and a Shodan provide just enough goofiness to make it fun (for me anyway). I don’t know why people who dislike him engage him anyway; he’s said stuff that pissed me off before, and I just ignored it. Mostly, though, I chuckle and shake my head. Sometimes he actually has a good point, I think, and he makes positive contributions in other places on the board too. I don’t think he’s some great debater, but I also don’t think he’s a total wash as a poster.
I actually kinda wish we had a couple more wackjobs on here (just a couple, maybe with a pet theory…). YMMV
(Although I will admit the last loony I was rooting for had a spectacular blowout in GD, you know what I mean, and I felt pretty bad.)
Sheees! And now you’re letting the world in on the fact the The PSOE is not really a scary socialist Party. Spoilsport. For you -----> :smack:
Now gimme back my hammer if you want your sickle back!
And speaking of loud, would you dweebs feed the freaking hamsters? Time-outs are outtta control.
I actually like him too. In CS he usually has a lot to bring to the threads (I usually just lurk in there myself), and I’ve found him quite engaging in my own obsession (the Total War games) on several occations.
In GD…well, honestly he’s more an annoyance than anything else (I’m guessing I fit essentially in the same category for a lot of people). I’ll give him this though…he’s MUCH more engaging (and an order of magnitude more intelligent) than, say, gonzomax who just pushes me over the top sometimes. DT tends to just have me rolling my eyes when he starts his mental tape recorder playing in a thread.
If you actually can sift through what he’s saying, occationally it can be witty or even profound. Even if you disagree with him at a fundamental level. The problem is you have to sift through quite a bit of his crap to get to anything worth reading…and most people don’t want to do that. Myself included until fairly recently.
Anyway, I’m sure he is in shock that I actually like him and hope he doesn’t manage to get himself banned. I don’t think he usually brings much to the GD debates, but I think he COULD…if he can ever get the chip off his shoulder anyway and actually engage and participate without trying to demonize anyone who disagrees with him.
