Der Trihs Suspension Discussion Thread

You are correct, but he might make an exception during the twilight months of his participation here. IIRC, he will on occasion drop a few wisecracks in the pit.

I remember him specifically saying he does so because he knows it that pile-ons never end well for the one at the bottom.

I think his explanation is quite reasonable.

If you write a big long thing, people have more room to jump around and ignore points, and then you just end up in a neverending back and forth, where you’re just talking around each other. I like to find baselines that we agree on before moving to the next layer of the subject.

Entirely fair point and a reasonable strategy.

Also, your posts were of the proper length - go a lot further than one screen shot and eyes glaze over.

Nice.

I think most everybody has already formed their opinions of you. I imagine it’s perhaps way too late to hope that the incredibly occasional apology is going to change much, along those lines.

Um, just to be clear, no snark was intended. :o

I know what you meant. No snark here either.

camille has it more correctly. Folks tended to focus on Der Trihs as some sort of special case, but there are a number of posters who have been treated the same way for the same reasons. Over the years, some have stepped over the line and have been banned, some have pulled back and become less noticeable, and some have drifted away from the board, but there was never a special exemption just for Der Trihs.

That’s enough. No more personal comments about anyone, by anyone, in this thread.

May I violate the above instructions, just slightly, to say that I, personally, will very much miss Der Trihs. I liked him from the first, and always wished that he and I could be good buds. I was always hesitant to disagree with him, as if it were a failing on my part.

Also, he was a really good comic books fan, and a valuable resource on that topic.

Not to take away from your sentiments, but this sounds like a eulogy. Der Trihs is just on a month suspension. He could be back in about 3 weeks or so.

I hope that helps you feel a bit better. You could still be good buds if he returns.

Hate to say it, but the track record of suspended people when they return is pretty abysmal. The kinds of people who rack up the warnings seem to do so from a sense of uncontrollable compulsion, something very hard to quash from the inside even after a huge volley has been fired across their bows from the mods.

If you can find some Dopers who got suspended but then indeed did clean up their act, I’d love to hear about them. But I don’t believe they exist.

Ibn Warraq is an example that springs first to my mind. IIRC he was suspended, and he has IMO developed into one of our better posters.

Shodan

Whether or not the same happens with the poster in question is another matter. If posting anything more restrained than “Republicans want women to suffer” is seen as telling a lie, then I suspect it won’t.

Shodan

That does; for some stupid reason I had thought it was permanent.

I’ve avoided weighing in on this, but you realize, don’t you, that he doesn’t HAVE to get banned, right? I mean, if he would just tone it down some I think he’d be fine. He’s smart enough to do so, if he can just find some self control.

It doesn’t help, IMHO, that his bad behavior has been encouraged, not just by the Mods but by his own ‘side’, such as he has a side. It doesn’t help him at all.

Habits are hard to break. A one month suspension doesn’t really give sufficient time to build other internet habits (i.e. spend less time at this board). And Der is down to his last strike, while he has a huge fan base gunning for his banning. Der might stick around for a few months though. Some posters proclaim that they will type any way they feel and basically dare the mods to ban them which is pretty undignified in my view.

Agree with this. I’ve battled the guy with mockery pretty much since I’ve encountered him. A few times I recast some of his arguments with less hyperbole, but that approach didn’t catch on. Which is ok.
As for the moderation here, the only special treatment Der has received has been negative: mod standards were tightened in the fall of 2013 following copious complaints about Der. Which I’m actually ok with. Subsequently I noticed a modest but noticeable shift in Der’s posting style, as did John Mace IIRC. Props to the mods for phasing in the new regime at slow pace.

Where are you getting that from?

I don’t think I did. I don’t read a lot of his posts, so I probably wouldn’t be able to judge anyway.

Der Trihs’ last straw warning was on the 27th, 17:15 my time. The announcement of the two new mods was also on the 27th, 17:17 my time. Der Trih’s suspension announcement was on the 29th.

Unless the two newbies didn’t get access to the mod loop until some time after they were officially announced, this seems inaccurate. Or it was a very short conversation!
