This is going to hurt him more than the Disney thing, which some people believed actually helps Disney if anything. Now Trump supporters are going to be showing up at all his events.
Yeah, it’s gonna be like football hooligans going at it. Popcorn or hot dog?!
If Disney really wanted to work against DeSantis, then I think their only option is to try to help flip the state blue in the general. Because, I don’t see a non-MAGA candidate winning the primary.
And who, on the MAGA side, is ever going to let up on Disney?
Disney has to continue to be “woke” (where “woke” means anything that treats people fairly and doesn’t include explicit conservative political messages). Has Trump made a statement that I am unaware of?
ETA: Actually, maybe Meatball winning the white house could be seen as good for Disney? Because potentially a more reasonable governor might take the reins in Florida.
You are assuming that de santis is a shill for big business who chucks culture war bones to the maga nutters for votes.
What if he is really sincerely a quasi fascist loon who will chuck a few economic bones at business for funding?
Eg Look at him trying to screw the cruise lines over passenger vaccinations. A move that made no rational capitalist swine sense.
Surely the danger for Disney is an escalating culture war that means that they have to choose which half of the USA to sell to. A few dollars in tax and regulations saved Is chickenshit compared to losing half the US market.
It’s early yet, but the capitalists sure seem to be opening their checkbooks for him:
Disney could threaten to move all of their parks out of Florida.
If the Red-Blue Cold Civil War continues, we could see more self-sorting not only of individuals but also corporations.
I think it’d be a hollow threat.
WDW is an absolutely massive complex, with over 50 years of infrastructure and development in place. Even if Disney were to actually be serious about relocating WDW out of Florida, it would take many years, and many billions of dollars.
It could be done in bits and pieces, including threatening not to build new stuff there.
Ultimately, Disney is worth more to the state than DeSantis is. They have a lot of leverage.
I don’t think moving Disney in pieces is even on the table. As mentioned, it would take years to get another, similar set of parks up and profitable somewhere else. Maybe even decades. And then you never know how the winds of change will blow, so that new place could end-up having a fascist-leaning governor with a chip on his/her shoulder at some point. Disney knows they are in a bit of a sitch right now, but it’s probably smarter strategically and economically to just keep their heads down and weather the storm where they are. Governors come and go - Disney’s world will be there much longer.
Basically agree, but I don’t think they are going to “keep their head down.” It’s a powerful corporation and will do all kinds of things to get what it wants. There are many ways it can wage war against the GOP nutters.
Funny quote from a kos article:
Yup.
I get why it’s easier for people to understand good versus evil. I think it’s disrespectful to the victims of The Holocaust to compare the GOP to Hitler. This kind of rhetoric isn’t helpful.
I think it is disrespectful to victims of the Holocaust for the GOP to be fascists, and to be cozy with neo-Nazis.
I think it would be disrespectful to the victims of the Holocaust if the GOP murdered millions of people. Trump used the fringe racists for votes, and you’re right, that is disrespectful. To everyone. Please note that not all conservatives are “Trumpers”.
It’s totally appropriate because the GOP have actually been operating like Nazis and using fascist social technologies to foment hate among their base and win votes. And Trump actually tried to remain in power via a coup!
It’s not just rhetoric any more. It’s been reality since 2016.
Further, there are many lessons to learn from the Nazis. The Holocaust is arguably the worst thing they did; it was certainly one of the greatest and most gratuitous evils in human history. I think Operation Barbarossa, however, is a close No. 2 (and was a big part of what made the Holocaust possible at the scale it happened), and now Putin is doing a repeat in the opposite direction of the compass.
Another very important lesson is how Hitler slowly and methodically took power; how he generated and sustained support and won elections. How he used hate to motivate. How he consolidated power once he became chancellor. When I personally compare the GOP to Hitler, I am focused more on this more than anything else. I am not worried about the GOP committing genocide. Not yet.
Finally, I think it’s ironic to say we can’t compare people to the Nazis precisely because the Nazis were as evil as they were. While I agree that superficial or incorrect comparisons are to be shot down, part of “never forget,” in my opinion, is making the comparison where apt and working to prevent it from happening again.
I could not agree more with that statement.
I kinda like Vivek Ramaswamy. But this graphic scares me:
How would Florida compel out of state bloggers to comply with their laws?
Anyone voting Republican is de facto voting for at least a proto-fascist party. And it isn’t even being hidden anymore. So it doesn’t really matter if they’re formally “Trumpists” or not. What matters who is whether they’re standing with the Party of Evil or not.
Ok. Good versus evil.
How about, “party of actions that lead to evil outcomes”? If “party of evil” seems too broad.
