DeSantis can't win the GOP nomination or the general election in 2024 {How Trump plays into this is allowed}

Haha, you’re right!

I talked about it here on the boards right after she lost the election, as people asked “what next”. I think she’s an awful choice for two reasons.

  1. She is a crazy, big personality, loud and CT-spewing. Like Sidney Powell mixed with MTG. She’s going to take attention away from Donnie and he would hate that. He probably wants a boring guy like Pence was, keeps their mouth shut and just stands there.

  2. Donnie also probably needs someone more boring and sane to appeal to a bigger demographic. Pence again did that job; he was somewhat old school Republican and actually conservative (big and little C both), and very religious. I don’t see Lake being a draw to anyone that wouldn’t vote for Trump anyway, except maybe a tiny number who want a woman and/or younger person as VP. (And that can’t be too many on that side.)

I still don’t think she’d be great and I think Trump’s people won’t either.

I will say one thing… She has broadcasting experience and she knows how to work a camera since she was a news anchor and reporter once. But I think she’d just serve better as a mouthpiece on Fox News or whatever to talk him up, she doesn’t need to be VP for that.

Do you think T****'s mind is capable of such subtlety?

Alternately, do you think he’ll listen to advisors whose minds are that capable?

Assuming he goes for her, I think the idea would be that she would take attention away from DeSantis rather than Trump.

Do you forget who his last VP was? Do you really think Trump picked him?

DJT probably feels that he learned his lesson there, and next time should insist on someone who is more willing to break democratic norms.

I don’t rule out his aides getting their way again, but, from their POV, it won’t be easy.

Maybe this was already mentioned, but what about Sarah Sanders? She’s not endorsing Trump now, but I don’t think that’s a stopper. Does Donald mostly trust her?

That’s… Not a bad call actually. I haven’t heard anyone mention her, but that would make some sense.

Yeah, Sanders sounds like the good toady type for him!

DeSantis/Sanders - OMG what a matched pair.

Only they have the wisdom to address the problems of a world saturated with doom and woke. Only they can restrain the Democrats who roam the world seeking the ruin of souls. Only they can grant us the four freedoms: the freedom to dictate what people may read; the freedom to determine who may vote; the freedom to cast out foreigners; and above all the freedom to reject science and its’ Marxism.

I can hardly wait.

You left out “the freedom to shoot or otherwise abuse non-white or non-male people with impunity”

That one’s pretty close to their Prime Directive, so it bears repeating.

Really? That video seems identical to the sort of outrage bait you see on right wing “news” these days.

Even if you take the story at face value, his comparisons are ridiculous. A college disciplining one of its employee is not analogous to a paramilitary force that inflicts violence on you for disagreeing with the government. Even his version is nothing like the Cultural Revolution, which was, well, an actual military revolution.

But, of course, you shouldn’t take this sort of outrage baiting summary at face value. They always leave out information, like that this happenened in 2021 and the guy had a history of previous infractions, including allegedly referring to minorities as "cockroaches. Here’s an actual news article on it:

Honestly, take out reference to conservatives denying climate change, and I could honestly think DeSantis doing the same sort of rant. (Though it would better fit Tucker Carlson). That this sort of thing is convincing to some people is exactly why DeSantis and his ideology is so dangerous.

Never assume that Bill Maher is being honest. He lies/exaggerates to generate outrage. That’s his schtick now. Maybe it has always been, I’ve never really watched him but certainly the videos I’ve seen in the past few years have always come down to him trying to generate outrage based on a loose interpretation of reality.

In “fairness” to Bill Maher, anti-woke has always been part of his schtick. As long as I can remember his monologues were generally critical of the right but also it’s the left’s fault for telling people you can’t say Christmas any more, or whatever.

If he believed all that crap before, of course he was going to be taken in by the current “woke panic”.

It’s just a bit weird because he’s generally a smart guy, it’s such an odd blind spot.

For example, his latest rant about woke talked about how statues of Lincoln are being taken down, and schools named after Lincoln are having to change their names.
But… These things aren’t happening. There has been one, weird statue of Lincoln with black people crying at his feet taken down, but no proposal to remove Lincoln statues in general. And there was a proposal to update all civil war era school names from one county, but it didn’t pass.

That’s what I mean he lies/exaggerates to create a strawman to rail against. So my assumption when I see a “Bill Maher said …” is that he was lying or exaggerating. He’s not generally honest.

Thanks. I plan to do a separate post on this issue!

One thing to always keep in mind regarding a GOP nomination for DeSantis is that
Everything.
Trump.
Touches.
Turns.
To.
Shit.

And Trump is currently touching the GOP nomination process.

I think we all know what will follow.

I see Trump losing in the primaries but not by a landslide. He gets called a loser by DeSantis. Trump then runs as a third party candidate and effs over the Republicans. He and DeSantis both lose and Trump will claim it’s DeSantis’ fault.

I really sincerely 100% hope that happens.

I do as well, for the obvious reason— split the right-wing vote and near-guarantee a Democratic victory.

Would Trump need to be nominated by an existing minor party to gain wide ballot access? I will be glad to stand corrected, but I think yes. If correct, it would seem like the Libertarian Party or Constitution Party are the only real possibilities. Or am I forgetting something obvious?

Would the Constitution Party really nominate someone who said:

Perot ran as the Reform Party candidate in 1996; it was founded in 1995 for that purpose, if I’m reading Wikipedia right. I don’t know that Trump would have enough lead time by the time he realizes he’s not going to win the Republican nomination, but I don’t think he needs to use an existing minor party.
