Was not surprised to see Christina go. Being a designer means listening to the client and bringing to life THEIR vision, not yours. She completely disregarded the fun element and focused on the “princess” aspect. Boring!
I also agree that** Josh ** should have gone. I really like his personality, but he hasn’t shown that he can build things and think outside the “silver/sparkly” box he’s cornered himself with.
I thought** Kim’s ** work with the tables was amazing. And she’s shown time and again that she can work well with other people.
Todd has so many great qualities, including an unbelievable positive energy, but like I’ve said before, he’s waaaay too cocky for my taste. Dude, find a shirt; we all know you’ve got a nice body and, as a hetero woman, I’d rather see you in jeans, work boots, and a t-shirt.
Rob is coming on strong, but there’s just no way that I see him as a show host. He’s just too disagreeable. He’s a strong leader except in the diplomacy department, which is equally essential to bossing people around.
I liked Will’s design okay, but the clips of him sure made it look like he’d swallowed some sour grapes. As far as space design goes, the room was big enough to hold 75 people. His comment about the chips brining in a different color palate was dead on, IMO, but he should have just kept it to himself.
Seriously, the shirtless thing is a total turnoff to me. I think the guy is very attractive, both in face and body, but a guy who is so vain that he takes his shirt off every chance he gets? No thanks!
I really thought it would be Sparkly dude going out in the first part and Will the chosen one. Goes to show how much I know.
At any rate, glad as I was to see Sparkle go, I thought it was very unfair to get rid of someone (other than the lead designer) when they really were just slaving to the leader.
It seems that next week will be another team challenge. C’mon HGTV, I know you are on a budget but this is ridiculous. Let them do individual work.
Yeah, I have to say I really enjoyed that other designer reality show…I think it was called Top Design? The challenges were much better…most were individual challenges, and they had some neat ideas for them. I watched this season of Design Star because I really like Vern Yip, but I’m not sure I’m going to stick with it.
I still say there is no way Robb is going to win once the viewers start voting. He’s just too— nasty. And I disagree completely about Will and ‘sour grapes’. It was Todd who first mentioned Robb’s out-of-porportion drawings and how it didn’t translate into the space and Will was completely right about the chips clashing. So right, in fact, that Robb had Will fix it— and then said Will did the least amount of work on top of it.
That being said, Will has no personality whatsoever. Kym is also quite bland. I predict Shirtless Wonder will win. He can join Ty Pendington in the Look-at-my-chest Hall of Fame.
I actually like Robb. It’s good to see a personality that’s not so touch-feely, and a guy doing design work who doesn’t have a trace of sissy. I don’t think Will can host a show just because his Southern accent is too rural and deep — “Ass jess whut I dunn.” Kim barely exists. And Todd is just a carpenter.
All these double elims tell me that the network didn’t like the show. They were in a hurry to finish it. I’ll be surprised if we see a third season.
ETA
Oh yeah, and the first thing I thought when I saw Sparkle’s big DD was Dungeons and Dragons.
They filmed part of this where I work here in Las Vegas and no, the double elims were always a part of the show plan - was all filmed before any exec’s took a look at the show.
The wedding was a mess, but partly due to the idiots getting married - it was almost as if they intentionally went out and waited in front of the local Walmart to find two people who had trouble chewing gum and walking at the same time. They didn’t even pretend to want to compromise, so my guess is that was part of the plan. I know lots of people in this city, and not one would want anything nearly as kitchy and crappy as that design.
I still think all of the designers this season are weak - none really stand out. At this point, I wouldn’t watch any of them if they get their own show. And I am so sick of Todd pretending to be the shirtless Mr. Studly…geez…talk a walk down Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood and you will find 1000 guys who look a hell of a lot better with their shirts off and are nowhere near as vain.
I joke that my mom’s second job is an interior designer, so she watches this show from time to time, and she’s told me that the line for being eliminated is “your show has been cancelled”. What a load of shit…for some reason that just pisses me off. Why can’t they just be like the guy from Hell’s Kitchen and say “now fuck off”?
(OK so that show has a retarded line too, but at least he adds pizzazz.)
Spoiler Ahead if you haven’t seen that episode yet!
So, the living room was OK - didn’t really like the rotating section of the room, but the rest of it was nice - good choice of colors and simple, sleek design.
The kitchen wasn’t great - nothing spectacular done at all - and the backsplash was unfinished and poor choice of color.
Kim and Robb - oil and water - he was the usual, arrogant prick, but she was the wimp and it was her own fault for not stepping up immediately.
Will and Todd - I like Will, but his presentation wasn’t great…and studly Todd had to take his shirt off again…maybe Kim should take hers off next week to up the ante on this show?
At any rate, glad Robb got the boot. So far, I still don’t think any of the last three have any real talent, but my guess is they will pick shirtless Todd to win…maybe they will have a special episode with last year’s winner, David, and he and Todd and take turns showing their nipples in close up while they are holding long, thick power tools.
First off, Wayne and his wife need to step away from the scalpel. They both look like death a-grinnin’. Yeesh! And they have gaudy taste.
I think Robb got the boot because it was finally clear how hard he was to work with being an asshole and all. Kim totally surprised me with her engaging hosting and will totally did not surprise me with his bland non-personality. Of the three that are left, Will would be the one I’d want to do my own home.
And Kim did try to assert herself with Robb but he was such a colossal egomaniac that it would have taken an armed insurgence to beat him off of his high horse as his bitched up, crying “you made a mistake” final interview showed.
You are right about the plastic surgery…I’m sure they are “nice, genuine people,” as one of the contestants said…but they sure look like they are made out of plastic! They did seem super nice, though…I give them credit for that.
I think Robb forgot that they are actually going to hire the winner to host a TV show. He isn’t nearly talented enough for HGTV to want to put up with a host who is an asshole to everyone.
I really did like Kim’s presentation the best, but I haven’t been able to tell yet if her design style is really any good. I think they are going to have a problem here…I agree with you that, of the final contestants, Will seems to have the most design talent, and he seems super nice, but he doesn’t have the personality on-camera that this kind of hosting job needs. I think you’re right that Todd will be the winner. Dear God, I hope they make him wear a shirt.
Todd is the clear front-runner, Kim the dark-horse, but honestly, I don’t think Will has a chance. (And I agree he’s the most talented of the three.)
I was DELIGHTED they sent Rob home. His arrogance and just mean-spiritedness was really grating on me. I thought he showed his true colors back when he was hiding stuff at the 99 cent store, so other contestants couldn’t use it. It was like he just never understood that at least half the equation had to be hosting ability, and you have to be likeable to be a successful host or no one will watch your show. I liked Kim’s this exchange (paraphrased):
Rob: She’s complaining now when just last week she was praising me as a manager.
Kim: I still think you’re a good manager, but I wasn’t your subordinate this week, I was your teammate.
And I liked that the judges rightly pointed out just how ugly, uncomfortable, and un-fun those sort of spats are to watch.
I hope they let the final three do individual challenges now. (They’ll have to, right?) I thought the individual challenge (and there’s been only one, right?) was 100 times more interesting and informative as to the talents of the contestants, than any of the team challenges.
Please, please, please. Individual challenges from now on. (I am assuming we have two more shows).
I found the spinning platform gimmicky, but then again, it is TV we are talking about. I really liked the kitchen, except for the backsplash, which even if it had turned out alright, was all the wrong colours. All in all, it was a very even performance from all parts involved.
Pity about Will. His shortcoming is only lack of experience in front of the camera, and because of the way the show is set, he won’t have any time to correct it. I doubt we will see him on the finals. Time to review the whole token black guy discussion we had at the beginning of the show (which was what, 3 weeks ago?)
I liked the bait and switch to the guest house. He He.
Plastic surgery aside, I agree that the Newtons did seem like a very engaging couple. I liked that Wayne (and Vern) could appreciate how much more difficult the kitchen was to do over the living room. That was just an unfair competition from the get go, especially when they didn’t adjust the budget up for the kitchen designers. Kim could hardly have bought a better table and chair set when most of their money went towards appliances. The living room folks had so much more time to invest in accessories, etc., because they didn’t have to re-wire and measure counters and tile backsplashes and move plumbing, etc… Unfair.
Robb buried himself with his cantakerous attitude. Good freaking riddance. Though I must say that I’m just thrilled that they caught Mr. HardAss weeping like a little girl.
I really wished we could have seen a Todd/Kim pairing. Because I have a sneaking suspicion that Todd is just as sexist and arrogant as Robb, but has learned to hide it better. Or maybe he just bugs the shit out of me because he’s constantly patting himself on his well-defined and perfectly suntanned shoulders.
I did not like the Lazy Susan concept in the living room. It might have worked with a larger room, but the furniture took up too much room on the platform for it to be practical. What happens when Grandma or a drunk guest falls off the ledge? Candice Olsen would have found a way to allow for multiple focal points.
I agree with the majority who think that Will has the best design sense. Maybe they’ll have co-hosts with Will and Kim. I could go for that. Bottom line is that I won’t vote for Todd. He can build shit, but he can’t engage me in design.
My girlfriend forced me to watch this show when it came on a few weeks ago.
Now, I’m the one telling her when it’s on… Wow. My first reality show. I feel dirty!
I only caught the very end this Sunday. It went as I expected, although I was surprised how sad the judges were to have to choose between the three but not how well Will took it. “I’m going to be a designer whether I do it on TV or not.” Good attitude.
If Will had his own show, he’s be the Bob Ross of HGTV.
I have yet to see one of the designers take the forefront and be pleasant/watchable about it this season. All of the rooms except the single room challenge with the wild waves that broke out of the space have been less than spectacular. No one is re-imagining the space and doing much more than accessorizing.
Surprisingly bland season. My guess for the winner is Todd because he’s more ‘TV People’ even if Kim is perkier.
I wasn’t wowed by any of the designs. I wish this had been one of the team projects because more hands would have made a much bigger impact. The coal miner’s room had such potential, but with such a time and talent restraint, I didn’t see a huge difference.
Of the three, I liked Will’s room the best, but I think his challenge was far less than the others to begin with.
I think Will was the best of the three, so as far as I am concerned, I won’t be watching either The Kim Show or Todd Show, no matter who wins.
I was shocked to see Todd shirtless in the beginning of the episode - gee, whodathunk he would take off his shirt in front the camera? Do you think he might take off his shirt again in the final episode in Hawaii? Any bets?
Kim’s design was so-so.
Todd’s was nothing more than wild color and some sofas…and the hammock looked like a recipe for disaster for little kids - only a matter of time until one falls on their head.
Will gave the little girl exactly the room she wanted.
Yeah, Will didn’t have the slick TV personality, but that hasn’t stopped about half of the people who already have shows on HGTV, so kind of unfair to dump him because he can’t smarm as well as the others.
