I know it’s out there because I’ve seen it a hundred times, but now I can’t find it.

On a lot of networks I’ve seen the machine’s network and user info overlaid on their desktop wallpaper on the bottom-right of the screen. Basic information like IP, host name, user name, and the like.

Now I’m not having luck finding any of that. I’m sure some people out there have deployed software like this. Can someone let me know the name of the software I’m trying to find?

There are probably many programs that will do this, but take a look at BGInfo.

For something that’s a bit more flexible (quite a bit more, in fact), check out Samurize. It takes a bit of work to set up, but you can display practically anything, from system information, to log files, to web pages, on your desktop in real time.
