Susan mentioned it a couple of episodes ago when they had their falling out.
WRT to Edie’s suicide (attempt?) being out of character: I’d say she is has some serious self-esteem and self-loathing issues going on. Not only is she boderline-antisocial, the sexual promiscuity and apparent excessive drinking are classic self-destructive behaviors.
Susan did, last week, in the context of the fight she had with Gabi over the wedding date.
There’s no way that filmy scarf had the tensile strength to break her neck or to hold her body for a significant period of time.
I think the “thump” you heard was just from her kicking the chair out from under herself. She didn’t have a long enough fall to break her neck.
My guess is that when we see her next, her (still alive) body will be dropped unceremoniously on the ground, and she will be left with an undignified injury like a broken tailbone. The question is, will Carlos feel sorry enough for her that he comes back?
Well sure, if they’re presented that way. But up until late in this season there was no indication that Edie was anything other than happy and functional as a party girl. She’s presumably making a good living selling real estate, having fun, drinking and getting laid. I should be so “self-destructive.” Then she gloms on to Carlos and suddenly her having fun becomes “classic self-destructive behaviour.” It was such a 180 for the character that I just don’t buy it. I bought the little “this is me” speech she gave a few weeks ago where she took off her clothes in front of Carlos, but now we’ve 180ed a couple more times.
We saw her dangling for a significant period of time.
Neck-breaking is not the point of hanging. Hanging causes death by slow strangulation, if I am correct.
Who was the woman playing Lynnette’s mom?
Suicidal death by hanging might be because of slow strangulation (because it’s poorly…uh… executed), but execution hanging definitely is intended to break the neck. There are actual formulas used to calculate the correct rope length so the fall breaks the neck. Only when errors are made is the death by strangulation.
Which is probably why executioners don’t kick chairs out from under people standing on them.
She was dangling for a few seconds, not the several minutes it would require for her to die. In fact, don’t people kick around a bit as their air starts to run out just from instinct to survive? She was just at the beginning of the process. Don’t worry, she’ll be saved. It’s just a question of how. After all, a soap always needs a good villain and Gaby doesn’t cut it - she’s shallow but doesn’t do evil things to others.
Actually, ** Viva **, I’ve always thought the objective of hanging usually is neck-breaking, although I guess if people don’t have something to jump off, like when people hang themselves in prison by tying a sheet to the bars or whatever, they do end up dying of strangulation. Anyway, one of my first thoughts was “that scarf is not going to work”. Someone more knowledgable than I (and that’s pretty much anyone) can 'splain it to us.
Lynette’s mom was play by Polly Bergen, who I know was pretty famous back in the day, though I can’t immediately recall what her big claim to fame was.
I know her mostly from game show repeats on GSN, but she was in a number of Broadway shows and had something of a film and television career.
That’s not the lady that played Flo “Kiss My Grits” in Alice, was it? I thought I recognized the name, but I didn’t recognize her. I may have gotten that mixed up.
You’re thinking of Polly Holiday, who actually would be good at playing someone’s feisty old mom. The last I saw of her she played Robin William’s feisty old neighbor in Mrs. Doubtfire.
Ah yes…much older woman. Thanks for the correction.
For the entirety of the show she’s had an obsessive envy of Susan that has caused her to do some seriously psychotic shit. I’m not sure that counts as happy and functional.
her feet weren’t kicking as they would in a strangulation situation. also the mbvo mentioned that edie decided to join her.
