I liked tonights’ episode- it had the usual lying, scheming, sadness, and laughs as every episode so far has given us.
I had to turn the channel when Lynette used her sons shaved head as a way into obtaining daycare, but the George/Bree almost kiss leading into toelessness (is that a word?) made me laugh out loud
It was a no brainer as to which I would watch- I can catch up on the Globes online.
(Let me just add this is the first time I used spoilers and I am SO proud I did not screw up!)
Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! I forgot to watch it! I knew the Globes were on and somewhere in my extremely fatigued brain I thought it was preempting the Housewives and I knew they weren’t on the same channel.
I have a sinking feeling that this show has a short shelf life. Northern Exposure and Ally McBeal are two examples of shows that were great for their first seasons or two, but eventually “quirky” becomes annoying. Lynette has already crossed that line for me, Gabrielle is getting very close, and Bree is on her heels.
I’m agreeing more and more with whoever it was a couple weeks ago called out Lynette as being totally disgusting. I was amused when she didn’t correct the gym attendant about her assumption of what the kid’s illness was, but when she began actively to exploit the assumption she crossed the line. I’m really hoping there’s a heaping helping of comeuppancein her future for all the crap like this she’s pulled.
Funniest scene in the ep had to be the chicken taunt.
So Mike has been married twice before? And he killed someone for Deirdre? Curiouser and curiouser.
Carlos picks now to start a family? That makes no sense, if he truly thinks he’s going to prison.
Looks like Bree is getting a stalker. Yawn.
Susan is still in danger of being found out, about the fire. What good did it do her to tell Edie, if she thinks Mrs. Huber wrote it in her journal? I guess she’s already broken into a house to steal something, so the writers couldn’t go there again.
If Lynnette is so desperate to get into this yoga class, wouldn’t it make more sense for her to get a sitter for the kids, and then go?
I think Carlos is a selfish bastard. When he and Gabrielle got married, they agreed no children. Now, he’s trying to change things, and she flat out doesn’t want kids. He’s going to sabotage her birth control so she falls pregnant, and bring a child into this world whose mother doesn’t want it? He’s a right bastard for that, and I hope they land his ass in jail.
I can’t see family friendly ABC-owning Disney allowing an episode about abortion, so it will be interesting to see how this turns out.
Lynette needs Super Nanny. Bribing her children with gum? And how come the older kid is not in school?
I go back and forth on whether or not Carlos loves Gabrielle. But either way, he definitely doesn’t want to lose her. And so he’s telling himself the same thing so many people have told themselves in the past “if we have a baby, then we’ll have to stay together.” The twist being that usually, we hear about a woman “accidentally” getting pregnant so she won’t get left rather than the other way around.
He does think he’s got a strong possibility of going to prison and he does want Gabrielle around when he gets back. He is thinking that a baby is a way to keep her there (without thinking through the details of who is going to care for the kid, who is going to pay for the kid, etc.).
The look on Susan’s face when Eddie threw the ashes on her was priceless. She knew she totally deserved it, but she just looked totally flabbergasted.
Although Lynette’s character is annoying, I think they wrote her that way intentionally. They are showing just how desperate she really is. She would do anything to have some time to herself, but every single time she sabotages it. Of course it is exaggerated, but I’m sure we all know someone who sabotages every good thing that comes by in their life.
I actually found myself feeling bad for Carlos. I think he really does love Gab, but deep down he knows the feelings aren’t shared on her end. Like someone said, I think he is falling back on the one thing most people do: a baby. He’s also looking for some level of security- like he said, a baby is concrete and always there. There is no stability in his life right now. I’m certainly not justifying his actions, but I can see his POV.
I’m still confused about the Mike thing. Eh, what’s new?
Bree’s relationship with the Pharmacist just seemed weird to me. He was way too into it from the get go; especially when all she wanted was to get back at Rex.
We don’t know who Deirdre is. All we know is that Mike was married to her.
She’s the daughter of the older guy who hired Mike to find her, or find a trace of her, or find out who killed her. Actually, we don’t even know that she’s dead, do we?
This made me realize my main worry about this show: the reason I get fed up with regular soaps (like Days) is that there is NEVER any resolution to ANYTHING. I hope we are given some resolution come the end of the season, otherwise the suspense might wear thin.
Except that DH isn’t a “quirky” show, it’s a black comedy. When watching a black comedy, you’re supposed to laugh at horrible people doing horrible things that you feel really guilty about laughing at. Like when somebody gets somebody else’s ashes thrown into their face.
If the characters were “likeable” it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun.
More specifically, I think it’s a satire of soap operas. Which makes all the columnists and other bloviators who talk about how DH is somehow reflecting the true state of women & mothers in America utter nonsense. This show is no more realistic than Dynasty or All My Children.
But I’m with PunditLisa. I’ll continue to watch, but I’ve given up caring – these women are all despicable.
Bree: uses George to make Rex jealous; covers up her son’s DUI/vehicular manslaughter…
Lynette: too many manipulations to count. And how long does she keep her kid out of school for having…what, a cold? Shouldn’tve fired the nanny, if yoga is that important to you.
Gabriella: let’s see…cheating on her husband; burns his passport; is only interested in his getting out of jail so she can restart the money spigot.
Susan: least despicable, but she did feign friendship to save her own ass. And the writers feel compelled to humiliate her every week.
Edie’s the only one we haven’t seen being dishonest and sneaky about something. She might play fast and loose with other people’s possessions (cash and stationery), but that doesn’t compare with what the other women are doing.
