Dessert Q: What exactly is a "fool"?

I was wondering if any Dopers have eaten (or made) a dessert called a “fool”? The name is usually preceded by a flavor or fruit, like a “lemon fool”, for one.
Typically, I understand it is a fruit puree and custard dish topped with whipped cream. But, help me picture it…

Is it like a parfait, perhaps? Or, a trifle served in individual those dessert glasses (instead of a giant trifle bowl) resembling what some call “hurricane glasses”, I WAG? …Or, is it effectively a synonym for a trifle???

Thanks,

It appears to be a smoothie of some sort

Dictonary.com says it’s “A dessert made of stewed or puréed fruit mixed with cream or custard and served cold.”
There’s a picture of a Rhubarb and Ginger fool on this page, it looks like an american pudding in it’s one-color consistentcy. I think this is the same recipe in a different dish.
There’s a Berry Rhubarb Fool layered with berries here.

First we pity the fool, then we eat the fool!
